Re: Old Gnome

Arch always has the latest stable version, so mate is your closest guess ...
if you want something more official, you can try XFCE, think it's similar enough

I agree.  I've been a long time Gnome user and I switched to XFCE with the release of Gnome 3.  Loving XFCE smile.

Gnome 2.x have been dropped by upstream. You really don't want to use it.

Re: Old Gnome

Despite it being dropped, couldnt you just roll your own, (this is arch after all!) using Compiz, either as a stand alone or as the wm for LXDE or XFCE? That always seemed to be the main draw of gnome IMO anyway.
Unless Im missing something compiz+nautilus plus a few other bits n bobs that you can pic n choose (or get from the affore mentioned DE's) and you've essentually got yourself gnome 2 with Arch support. Chuck footprint or 2 in there, they'll be none the wiser!

Re: Old Gnome

I'm looking into trying out other environments, I have ruled out kde so far and I'm planning on trying xfce, lxde, enlightenment, or possibly not use an environment and try openbox. Thanks for the help guys and any advice would be appreciated!

Sure, if you don't mind not having any bug/security fixes, improvements, and that you have to keep track of and rebuild whenever some of the libs it requires is updated etc.

It will be a heck of a lot of work. (Which is why I suspect that the Mate project will die in the not to distant future too)
