I've been on Arch since 3days now. When installed for the first time I installed SLiM, so that I can have a graphical user interface on the log on screen. But I uninstalled it. I've Xfce. The computer shut down properly for a few times. Since yesterday when I press the shut down button in the upper right corner in Xfce some coded screen comes up it says,
> POWER OFF
after this it would shut off automatically.
But now it says,
> POWER OFF
[ 45656.5984714] Power down.
And it stays there forever. I have to physically pull the power plug or shut off the main power button. I've ACPI turned ON and is in S1 State.
Please suggest how do I resolve this problem. Help would be really appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Regards,

Have you only tried shutting down from within xfce? Tell us whether it works to enter "sudo poweroff" in a terminal. And since you didn't mention whether you were in the "power" group or not... make sure you are in it!

Yes, I'm in the "power" group. I also tried "sudo poweroff" but that too ended giving the same result. And I had to pull the plug again.

Does running "shutdown -h now" as root work? If not, what error does it return?

@Rumor
I tried your method. And I got the same result. Seems pulling the plug is the only way for now.

I'm suffering from the same problem but in my case it is due to faulty mobo installation (methinks). Also, have you enabled acpi settings in the BIOS?

ACPI in the BIOS is currently set to S1 state, as mentioned in my first post. In the "Configure S.A.T.A. as" option I've set the mode AHCI instead of IDE.
Any other suggestions experts, please?

Are you using networkmanager by any chance? Try omitting it from your rc.conf if you do and see if it makes any difference after a reboot. A few days back I've had the same problem, which was strangely caused by networkmanager, switching to wicd solved it completely.

Running arch is like raising a puppy - if you spend a bit of time with it each day and do just a bit of training you'll end up with the most loyal partner you could want; if you lock it in a room and don't check on if for several days, it'll tear apart your stuff and poop everywhere.

Use the command poweroff as root in the terminal.

I tried this. But no luck. Still the same problem.
btw, my rc.conf reads,
DAEMONS=(hwclock syslog-ng dbus networkmanager netfs crond)
One more thing. This problem not only occurs when I'm running Xfce. The system wont shutdown even when I login and then try to shut it down with sudo poweroff command, on the command line.

you don't happen to have any Wake-Up functionality enabled for say your mouse, keyboard or lan card? (this would be a bios setting)
sata mode shouldn't influence this.

^Nope. Wake Up function is totally disabled. One more thing that I've observed is, Just before the last message come up on the screen the keyboard lights (num, caps, scroll), they all turn ON and get off.
Then I get this message
[ 45656.5984714] Power down.
The numerical string changes with every shut down command.
anything else I should check?

I don't know if your problem is related to my recent problem, but you should maybe try disabling hwclock in /etc/rc.conf?

the e1000e module was causing hangs similar to this a while ago, do you per chance have that module loaded?
lsmod | grep e1000e
if that module is loaded, please try this as root:
rmmod e1000e
and then try a shutdown again. Sadly, the related bugreport is unavailable with bugzilla.kernel.org being down at the moment.
The problem with this being that so many things could be causing the hang on power down.

I was just going through AHCI article. And I added it to the modules. Rebuilt the kernel. Restarted the system. And VOILA the system did shut down this time. I'll check if the system shuts down and report back. May be then I can change the title to [SOLVED]
fingers crossed!

@Stefan
I tried doing that. But no luck.
Yesterday night after posting the above post. The computer powered off 3-4 times successfully. This string "[ 45656.5984714] Power down" appeared for a split second and the system turned off.
But today morning I turn it ON and after doing some work shut it down and the same problem surfaces. Should I get my mobo checked or my power supply unit?

I take it running init 0 as root doesn't work?

Okay, guys. I have tried everything you've mentioned. I enabled AHCI in the modules, the computer then shut down for 3-4 successful attempts. Then it did not. BIOS Update was available for my mobo, so I updated it. It then powered off for again 3-4 successful attempts. And then again I'm back to square one. A friend of mine will be coming over for de-bugging. And I'll post the updates.
Thank you all for your help. In the mean time if any one else has any suggestions, please don't hesitate to post up. I'd be more than grateful. Thank you once again.
