Hi!
I've bought an Acer Aspire 3002LC laptop last week, and I'd like to install Arch on it. But I failed to find information about every hardware in it, so I'm pretty chicken diving into it.
I've installed it once, but ran into problems, and deleted the partitions. If these can be solved, I'll reinstall in no time
These are the specifications:
· Mobile AMD Sempron 2800+ processor
· 15.0" XGA TFT LCD
· SiS M760GX video chipset
· 256MB DDR RAM
· 40 GB HDD
· DVD/CD-RW Combo
· SiS(7012) audio chipset with a Realtek AC97 Codec (ALC203)
And my problems:
· I don't know how to set up X. I don't even know what driver should I choose, as I've found nothing related in google or at linux-on-laptops.net. Nor do I know how to set up an LCD screen. (Hsync/Vrefresh etc.)
· The sound chipset. The hotplug daemon loaded the intel8x0 module, but when I ran alsamixer, it said "No mixer elems found" and exited.
· I'm chicken because I fear my laptop would overheat. There's nothing under the fan directory in /proc/acpi, and in spite of the common experience that fans spin all the time, this one doesn't spin at all. Will it turn on when the laptop's getting hot? Or should I not risk it?
Thank you in advance for any help!

For the X setup, you can use hdw to create a sample xorg.conf file.

Thanks for the idea.
Hwd's sample Xorg.conf didn't work out as much as I hoped, but I used it as a base and set it up with xorgcfg -textmode. Unfortunately only 'vesa' works...
The sound issue is resolved too, by itself
And the fans turn on automagically 8)
So there's only a minor problem left: the sis driver works, X runs fine, but it 'kills' my consoles, I can't switch back anymore, they're just blank. With vesa, they work fine. What gives?

try removing this from xorg.conf:
Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"
It was messing my consoles.

Thanks for the idea, but I don't have that line, I left it out intentionally.

hmmm, this is a kernel framebuffer problem - i seem to recall people having this with the intel i810 (or whatever) drivers...
try using the sisfb framebuffer on boot (keep a backup boot line just in case, heh) - IIRC the intel problem was solved in a similar manner
Example for sisfb as part of the static kernel: Add the following line to your lilo.conf:
append="video=sisfb:mode:1024x768x16,mem:12288,rate:75"
that's an example... but you should be able to do something with it

Thanks! It worked!
I've enabled sisfb, haven't touched my lilo.conf, but the framebuffer works automatically. I've set Xorg.conf to use the sis driver, and everythings fine!
Two issues resolved one night, today just HAS to be a fine day
