pacman hangs indefinitely from within qemu

hey guys,

I have a qemu img that I dd to a usb stick so I can carry arch around in my pocket. Lately, when upgrading,  pacman stalls while downloading Libreoffice. Icewm's applet shows that the processor is pegged, but conky shows only 5% cpu usage. I'm stumped. I've tried killing pacman and starting over, but that creates all kinds of problems.

any ideas? anyone experience anything similar?
