How to change default PulseAudio/alsamixer volume?

I'm using PulseAudio the Gnome 3.2 desktop, and when first logging on the volume is very low. I followed the suggestion in this thread:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=75083

to use "alsamixer -c 0" and turn up the "Master Front" volume to maximum. All volume controls then work fine.

However, I was wondering if there's a way to set a higher default level for the Master Front setting without having to use alsamixer. I don't want to ditch PulseAudio, as otherwise it all works fine.
