My headset hasn't worked kernel 2.x nor 3.0. Btw my headset has worked under the latest version of ubuntu.

That's really not enough information for us to work on, we'll need to know a little more.
- What headset are you using? (brand, model, type... bluetooth, wired?)
- What laptop are you using (again; brand, model)
- What sound system are you using (ALSA? OSS? Pulseaudio yes or no?)
- What desktop are you using (KDE, Gnome, LXDE...)
It could be as simple as the microphone channel being muted or low volume.
Anyway, we'll need some more info

The in-kernel ALSA is different, surprisingly, to the alsa-driver from ALSA. For example, I need to install alsa-driver, because the in-kernel code in kernel 2.6.39.4 doesn't use all 6 speakers in surround51 for my Acer 8930g laptop.
So, in my kernel config, I have just:
$ zgrep SOUND /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_SOUND=m
# CONFIG_SOUND_OSS_CORE is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_PRIME is not set
$ zgrep SND /proc/config.gz
# CONFIG_SND is not set
So anyway, try that, then look at packages.ubuntu.com for Ubuntu's patches to alsa-driver.
