I've installed Arch on an old Compaq PIII 1Ghz desktop box. The install went well until I tried to get X to start.
I've given up hope on using the xf86-video-intel driver & have been trying to use the vesa driver. I've used all kinds of options that I've scroogled up but none will get me there.
Something I'm wondering is whether the GPU running in vesa mode can handle resolutions like 1920x1200?
I tried installing another PCI graphics card, (turned off the onboard one in the BIOS), but all it does for me is post beeps in a fatal fashion.
If someone has ever got this GPU & monitor to work I'd love to hear what you did to do it?
Thanks in advance.

I used to be surprised that I was still surprised by my own stupidity, finding it strangely refreshing.
Well, now I don't find it refreshing.
I'm over it!

Extremely likely not. You can use the intel driver. Just turn off all acceleration: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … tel_driver

Thanks for your reply Gusar.
I gave it a try but I still can't get X to start. I think I'll just make this box an emergency backup replacement IPCop box, & use my current IPCop backup to do the job intended for the old compaq with bad vision.
At least the "new" box has an AGP slot in it, so I have some room to move in trying to get it into a friendly relationship with the 1920x1200 monitor.
I think I'll call this thread solved.
