I did a full system upgrade this morning and when I rebooted, I got this error on startx : http://i.min.us/jQcwS6vBYyROs.jpg. I've been through the forums and on irc, but have yet to figure out a solution. I've downgraded the nvidia driver, done other upgrades, recreated the xorg.conf with nvidia-xonfig. I really don't know what to do anymore. Any help would be great.

You may wish to edit the title to say something like "nVidia Kernel Module fails to initialise".
Your problem isn't with X; X is trying to provide as much help as it can in response to your module-level problems.

Note the API mismatch in the error message. You're loading an old nvidia kernel module. You don't by chance have 'nvidia' listed in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf?
Nope, it's not in there

Here's the full log if it helps:

What about the system's kernel log? The error message you received directed you to investigate that file.

You mean the /var/log/Xorg.0.log? That is it

That is your X log. X is just a set of programs and libraries which has nothing to do with your problem. The log file you've provided just repeats the information from your screenshot. They both reference a kernel log, which is the log for the actual kernel, running underneath X.
I'm not on my Arch machine at the moment, so I don't know what the file is called. On my debian machine, I suppose it's the one called kern.log, although I'm not an expert on these things.

so firstly is loading nouveau, which is impossible since nvidia package backlisted it
paste the output of bsdtar -t -f /boot/initramfs-linux.img

Hmm, as I say, I'm no expert on these things, so maybe I'm missing the mark completely. Still, it looks fishy to me that Xorg is talking about the version of an nvidia module, but the kernel is loading nouveau instead.
Maybe someone who knows more will correct me, but if it was me, I would try loading in the proprietary nvidia blob and blacklist nouveau.

also be sure you rebooted after installing nvidia

I'm running a LiveUSB of Ubuntu right now
The kernel log you provided also mentioned Ubuntu.
Are you sure you gave us the log for the correct kernel?
When Xorg bails out, are you able to access a command line using say Ctl-Alt-F1, and give us the kernel log from within the environment you actually want to run?

Okay, your kernel log doesn't really say anything we didn't see in the screenshot :-S
I just did stfw on:
nvidia "api mismatch" "arch*"and got a number of hits. Maybe they will help.

so until now you provided the wrong logs? damn you
pacman -Qs nvidia
have you used nvidia installer from nvidia website without telling us?
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

No, it was just the kernel log that was from Ubuntu. And everything I do is through pacman.

I didn't though. Honest to GOD. Is there another way that file could have made its way in there?
