I am using AwesomeWM, SLiM and ALSA. All to the latest updated versions on pacman/AUR.
Last night I hit "mute" by accident, and when I unmuted all sound was gone from my system. The speakers are fine, the alsamixer shows volume levels are fine, I tried removing and reinstalling pulseaudio, restarting and whatnot.
I have never been stumped like this by a problem!
Many thanks,
Asaf.

Check alsamixer again, you probably forgot some volume with mute still on. Check your hardware as well.

The hardware is fine, since it works now.
The mixer was definitely not the problem. The sound did not work even with all the channels unmuted and on 100% volume. I think I know what the mute button does to the mixer, I wrote the script.
I have no idea why it started working again. It just did.
