Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi,

Been a long time Ubuntu user and got fed up with it and decided to switch to a simpler (in my eyes) distribution. Love the fact that Arch is rolling release too. Very happy so far.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi, I've been using Arch for a while now, I started with Mandriva when MS Vista was launched, then moved on to Ubuntu's various incarnations. After getting fed up with the various issues of Ubuntu and its sub-projects I experimented with Debian, Mint and Crunchbang in rapid succession until I got enough courage to try Arch. So far this has been good but now I need to find some help with niggling issues - that is why I am posting here... you'll see some questions shortly in the (hopefully) relevant sections.

Indeed welcome :-)
What should I do if I see a package should depend on another, and it doesn't in pacman? catalyst/catalyst-hook should depend on linux-headers, it doesn't! (or is there a reason?)

Problems with packages from the repos should be reported to the bugtracker, problems with packages from the AUR - on their AUR page.
Bee sure to check the bugtracker / the AUR comments before posting because somebody might have already done it.

You can open a thread on the forums if you are not sure if this indeed is a bug.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi

I'm new to Arch (first install last Friday) but not to Linux. Been using Linux since the mid 90s. Mainly SuSE and Debian and for the last few years Ubuntu but played a lot of distros over that time.
I am a network engineer / consultant and mainly use my PC for writing documents, research and running GNS3 to play with router configurations.
Lately got tired of the sluggishness of Ubuntu and wanted something leaner and more customisable but with more up to date packages than Debian.

I am loving Arch, its blindingly fast on my PC with XFCE4 and pretty good with KDE (much more responsive than even SuSE for KDE).

Still finding my way around how it all bolts together but its a good fun distribution and the WIki is ace. I think I am going to stick with Arch.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey y'all

I'm not new to Linux, or Arch for that matter.
I've been bouncing between various versions of Ubuntu and Fedora.
My last Linux install was Fedora 13.

The first time I used Arch was a few years back now, in high school. I wanted something relatively complex, but lacked the processing power to compile something like Gentoo in a reasonable amount of time.
The Arch philosophy, and the distro itself really jived with me. So I downloaded a copy and had at it.

Unfortunately I tried to install it on a laptop that only had a wireless connection to the internet. Getting that thing setup quickly became an exercise in frustration, and I gave up.

Now I'm a few years older, a few years wiser, and I decided to install Arch in a VMWare virtual machine as a personal web server. (Why spend money on a web host when you pay for the fastest internet you can get in your apartment complex?)

I've been having a blast with Arch this time around and hope to get a bit more involved with the community as I learn.

Eventually I'll get Arch running on bare-metal again, but currently I need to use Windows for some Microsoft related coursework.

I'm a programmer, mostly scripting languages, I currently have a soft spot for Ruby, but I do a lot of JavaScript and Java at work, programming for iOS/Android.
I'm also mildly addicted to Counter-Strike:Source and Starcraft 2, as well as Forza 4 (who wouldn't be addicted to nice cars?)

So I've been around the block with computers.
It's nice to meet y'all, and I hope to be seeing you around these forums!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello folks. I'm a user going waaaaaaaay back to around 2006 or so, and have just registered today.

I have to say I'm extremely impressed with the speed and reliability of this distribution of Linux. I've used SuSE and Red Hat distros ages and ages ago, and from time to time will occaisonally install a version of Ubuntu on my laptop just to see how that distro is going. To date Arch is the speediest and most lightweight-feeling of any flavor of Linux I've ever tried. A big shout out to all the important peeps behind this project smile. Keep up the good work! Arch has been able to fully handle anything I've thrown at it (I've got running on 2 servers now at my house, 1 being a network/file server and the other being a super simple NAT router box.) My next project will be investigating ways to set up an Arch-based VPN so I can access my network while i'm on the road. Wish me luck!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone.

I have very minimal linux experience, Red Hat for a few weeks in 1997 ot 1998.  I have tried Debian and Slackware for a few weeks also.  The distro I used the longest was Ubuntu, for about 6 months, but I lost interest in using it as I was unable to fully configure Quakeworld properly on it.  I initially wanted Linux for very childish reasons, to smurf and teardrop IRC users in the late 1990's, but then I completely lost interest (grew up) and my passion for Linux moved onto wanting to play Quakeworld on Linux.

Now I am trying, through the urging and encouragement of a fellow quaker, Arch Linux, which I have been using for about a week.  He guided me through my first install, which I have reinstalled about 3 or 4 times since, due to errors, him not being online, and having no idea how to fix it besides reinstallation.  I now have a functioning KDE Arch setup, with Quakeworld nearly fully configured, just need to iron out some performance issues.

Anyway, after searching Google for answers and reading the Arch Wiki (FAQ, Beginners` Guide etc) and being informed about this website, I will be using this forum extensively to help me learn and configure my new system.  Which it is very exciting, as I have always wanted to learn Linux but have always been unable to for various reasons.  This is the best attempt at it I have had so far.  I look forward to eventually playing Quakeworld and perhaps other Linux based games!

Blindcarnt.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello all,

Been surfing the forum for a while. Just recently started an account. Newbie to 'nix so will be contributing more questions than answers, at least to start wink. Having major problems getting wlan0 to connect to the internet and figuring out how to mount a usb device. More to come on that to be sure...

Hoping to use Arch as a development platform and a tool for learning about network systems and security. Right now I am picking up Python which is object-orientated and reading about Unix and Shell Scripting with a keen eye turned towards C++, HTML, CSS and Dart.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello, Folks.

Used Arch before, stuck to Ubuntu, though, as there was nothing really unnerving about Ubuntu, but it was ever so slightly more convenient.

Came 11.10, came Unity without any alternatives, two systems rendered technically unusable with just one button press: Goodbye, Mr. Shuttleworth, you buggy little Steve-Jobs-imitator with extra dictator-mindset but without the tech- and design-savvy; Hello, true configurability, hello, rolling releases: Hello, Arch!

Hello! I don't know when I started using Archlinux. Anyway it was a a couple of years back, maybe in 2008. I'm currently using it on my home machine and my laptop and I'm quite content with it. So... Hello! smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Just wanted to say thanks to all the contributors to Arch Linux.

i used Slackware and then Mandrake many years ago. Used FreeBSD for awhile too.  Mostly stayed in Windows environments despite being a hobbyist programmer.  Every couple of years would check out the Linux scene.  Should  be here to stay now.

Love how Arch "just works".  All my hardware was recognized and worked without much fuss.  Main reason I left Linux was networking related issues and lack of time/desire to make it work myself.  Arch also fixes the other problems i had of so much random stuff installed for no reason.  I know what (most) everything on my system is there for and why i need it.  Gentoo was my choice several years ago when i ran a *nix server, but all that compiling made uptime an issue. You've got the best of both worlds.  Like how old hardware is kinda thrown out too. Was time for a good reset of base line.  You've made all the choices i would have if i were to design a distribution.  THANKS

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Heyas everyone

My first contact with linux was like 16 years ago with red hat and slackware. But for gaming reasons i sticked with windows.
5 months ago i rejoined linux starting with Fedora 15 on release day (pure 'luck') while changed to F16 (rawhide) after 2 months.
Meanwhile i had tested debian, ubuntu, mint, sientific... by now i want to get closer to the system, and i think arch is the next logical step... having lfs as final destination / experiment. wink

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi all,

Arch Linux is absolutely amazing!!! I wish I had tried it earlier. This is THE DISTRO for people who want to learn Linux from the ground up. Back in the days of books and paper Slackware was the Linux learning distro but Arch is absolutely tops in documentation.

The best thing about it is that it runs a modern kernel on on old computer. I've installed it on a Celeron 1Ghz with 384 MB ram circa 2003. Running a full desktop on LXDE with Libroffice, samba, acrobat reader, xsane, flash, brassero DVD burner, vlc player the works. It boots in under 40 seconds and shuts down in less than 25 seconds.

Previously ran Ubuntu 8.04LTS on this machine but it crawled. Arch has made almost as fast as a Macbook.

Thanks to all who've done such a great job in building, documenting and AURing.

Regards, S.
