I'm having trouble getting Hi10P videos to play on mplayer/mplayer2. I was under the impression that mplayer supports Hi10P playback natively without any modification. I understand that Hi10P can only be used with software decoding right now because no graphics cards support 10-bit decoding, and as such I've tried pretty much every output driver available to me in smplayer (options --> preferences --> general --> video --> output driver) and most output drivers won't even start playback, but some (xover, fbdev(2), v4l2, mpegpes) will play sound but no video shows up at all. I was wondering if the versions of mplayer in the official repos support Hi10P playback or if I need to get one of the versions in the AUR, or if I possibly have some other problem that I'm overlooking. I'm using an ATI radeon 5870 with the catalyst drivers for the record.

Maybe update your player from official repo? I have no problems (AMD Radeon HD 4650, Catalyst 11.8).

Solved my problem by downloading mplayer2-git from the AUR, couldn't get Hi10P videos to play with the official repo versions.

anyone has a sample do check it myself?
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

I had a similar problem as well when I used pacman to install mplayer2. I wasn't able to play new anime on mplayer2, so I decided to uninstall it and download mplayer (not mplayer2). It worked great for me, and I hadn't had any problems since.

vdpau dont support Hi10P (nvidia users)

It's because the ffmpeg in repos does not do HI10p, and mplayer2 is dynamically linked against it on repo.
If you don't want to build from AUR, you can get statically linked binary from mplayer2 site.
i don't know from where you get that. our ffmpeg is identically with ffmpeg 0.7.6 and this version has the same features as ffmpeg 0.8 but using oldabi

mplayer2 use libav, no ffmpeg.
mplayer2 include "own" source of libav for build without ffmpeg/libav system dependecy

Well, I'm using smplayer with mplayer and had no problems with HI10P.

Same here; the only thing that doesn't work properly is VDPAU which I can live with.
