what if you want to have 3 clients horizontally tiled?

I think you can't. IMO it's not that usable but it would be good to also have that layout.

Dusty wrote:

Some dialogs refuse to go into tiles mode. When you have both floating and tiled windows, its impossible to hide the floating windows like it used to be in wmi-10.

Floating windows are always on top now which is logical. Usually floating windows in a tiled workspace are just temporary dialogs.
You can always create a workspace with a float layout.

I also think IRC or the ML is the right place to post these bugs and feature requests. Here it's not likely to reach garbeam. The site also has a nice section for this.

I don't think any of us are "posting bugs" - we're just discussing oddities - the mouse focus thing has already been fixed in the latest snap anyway.

Not useable? This is THE standard layout for gimp...

With all the changes flying around in wmii, I don't think there's much point posting bugs yet. The bugs become obsolete quickly!

Indeed...hadn't thought of that one.

Re: wmii-2-rc1

After using this, is anybody else finding the layout mechanism kind of restrictive? I can't have arbitrary layouts anymore.

I didn't really notice this until I wanted to put iphitus' sidenotes app on my screen. It works ok in tiled layout, but I can't resize the right tiles. Also, sometimes I want to put a terminal across the bottom, and I can't do that either. :'(

Oh well. wmii-3 will be something else. :-D

Re: wmii-2-rc1

also... input focus does follow mouse - I click on my firefox window and start typing and *bam* "command not found" from the terminal

I guess you can duplicate it a bit with resizing in like grid/tile mode

you can define new layouts, I thought... right?

Er... I think that feature's been removed.  I forgot about grid layout though.

Re: wmii-2-rc1

interesting thing to note:
anslem is forking the plan9 rc shell for linux - the rc shell from plan9 was designed simply for running scripts... it's not made to be an interactive shell.

rci (rc improved) : bash
500K (staticly linked) : 800K (dynamically linked)
200K RAM usage : 1.9M RAM usage

rc is supposedly ~50 times faster than bash and has a more C-esque syntax

rci is going to be used as the interpreter for all wmii scripts.

PS wmii-2 final should be released soon, wmii-3 will include rci

Re: wmii-2-rc1

I saw a note about the shell replacement in the mailing list, but I wasn't sure whether it was something from scratch or not.  Interesting..faster is better I guess.  I'm interested to see the acutal speedup when its put in place.  I'm still really impressed by wmii.

Re: wmii-2-rc1

I really like wmii2.  I have an annoying problem with it though.  After using it for a bit, keyboard combos quit working.  ctrl+alt+a doesn't bring up the actions window.  same for ctrl+alt+p and the programs window.  alt+l and alt+h quit working...etc.  Is that just my setup or have you guys seen this too?

Re: wmii-2-rc1

I've seen the keyboard combo problem, but I'm pretty sure its because I accidentally went into move or resize mode... Try pressing escape a couple times and see if that fixes it.

I've noticed that xbindkeys and wmii don't play nice.

I tried ESC several times.  But I didn't try MODKEY+esc.  If/when it happens again, I'll try that.

Re: wmii-2-rc1

Also take a look at the box in the lower right corner to see whether you're in move/resize mode.

The format is:
<page number><layout><mode>
1tn (page 1, tiled layout, normal mode)
5gb (page 5, grid layout, bare mode)
3mm (page 3, maxed layout, move mode)
... etc ...

Re: wmii-2-rc1

So! It's tommorow!

im giving this wmii thing a shot. It's wierd. And that's coming from an ion3 user. but it did give me a few ideas to improve my ion config tongue

Still playing around with it, it feels like a warped mixup between a regular wm and a tiling wm.

ok, idea stealing time over, back to ion big_smile

I would concur if you remove the word 'warped'. :-D

I don't like how the floating layer is always on top. It wasn't like that in wmi-10. I'm hoping they're going to 'fix' that; maybe they already have. Or maybe they say its a feature to have them always on top...

I'd submit it as a bug/feature request and see if they can add a toggle for that in ixp

Re: wmii-2-rc1

Our good man, phrakture has packaged wmii-2-rc2. I don't notice many differences, but its less quirky/buggy.
