Sound not working outside of KDE (Phonon)

So, my installation of Arch has gone reasonably well so far, with only a handful of major problems to fix.

However, I have had some issues with my sound. Right off the bat, as for important information, I have only ONE sound card.

My problem is as follows: When booting into KDE, I have absolutely flawless sound functionality. I can hear the startup noise, as well as the assorted effects that come up. However, any other application that is outside of KDE has NO sound whatsoever. I believe that this problem is caused somewhat by the default configuration for my sound card.

You see, when I go into the Phonon settings, I have these things listed for pretty much all playback settings:

HDA Intel (ALC272X Analog) [1. ALSA: x- phonon:CARD=0,DEV=0  2. ALSA: plughw:CARD=0,DEV=0]
HDA Intel, ALC272X Analog (Default Audio Device) [1. ALSA: default:CARD=Intel]
default [Default Audio Device]
hw:0,0

The only device that works when I click Test is the first one. I believe that if I could somehow set the default card to this one, instead of the CARD=Intel one, my audio might work.

Am I correct in diagnosing the problem, and if so, how can I change the default? Every problem to do with default devices that I've seen deal with multiple audio cards. I'd appreciate some help.

Yes, I did check that wiki page, and as I said, while there is information on how to change the default sound card for systems with more than one card, I'm not exactly sure how I can change the exact configuration of one, or at least change the sound card when there's TWO "soundcards" of the same name.

Exactly same problem here. Any ideas?
PS: in my case it was "independent" setting in alsaconfig which turned the sound on.
