No.

GNOME3 is slightly better now, no glitches, but still windows moving is lagging.

AUR was updated to 11.10, repo will be updated soon.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

While it stinks that ATI has not gotten the driver to work with the new xorg, I am not getting upset about it yet.

There's an easy workaround by just using the older version of xorg.

sleepforlife, you should be very thankful AMD exists as otherwise graphics card and CPU prices would be much higher due to monopoly conditions.

So, how is the new driver? (Besides the gnome-shell thingy)

Quick testing after and it seems like an awesome driver, atleast compared to the last crashing one.

Kde works with opengl2 (and 1 I guess). Doesn't crash anymore and is fast. Compositing totally usable now.
Don't see any corruption anywhere.

Wine works, tested with dragon age origins. Seems to run a bit snappier than before.

Video, xv gl both work just fine.

Haven't really had any tearing issues nor do i use the ati video acceleration thingy so cannot comment on those.

I could whine about no latest xorg support but don't care enough about that to whine big_smile

So verdict 9.5/10

I agree with Mikko777, it seems reliable. I have to test hdmi before being happy. ;)

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Ok, so I upgraded from 11.9 (running as well as possible) to 11.10 from catalyst repo, I use the xorg110 repo
— my xorg.conf seem’s ok (the same than before)
— the fglrx module build well (seem’s to : no error output)
— the fglrx is in my MODULE section in /etc/rc.conf
— I also have the nomodeset in my grub
— booting I get the « gnome-shell » version of gdm

But :
— when I open my session (on « Gnome ») I don’t get gnome-shell
— fglrxinfo give me :

sudo fglrxinfo                                                                            1 ↵

X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 136 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 15
Current serial number in output stream: 15

— lsmod |grep fglrx give me :

fglrx 2907077 3
button 4470 1 fglrx

Any idear where I can search for the problem ?
Thank’s

You get an "OK", if it build well. For example:

upgraded catalyst-utils (11.8-1 -> 11.10-1)
Building fglrx module for 3.0-ARCH kernel ...
Ok.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Do we know how long it'll be until the catalyst driver starts supporting xorg-server 1.11? I can't be arsed to downgrade to 1.10, so I guess I'll just have to put up with the lack of a method for controlling the fan speed in the radeon driver until next version of catalyst.

I'm getting the same problem too. I reboot, and dmesg tells me that the CMMQS handle is invalid for fglrx. I'll post an example when I'm at that machine again.

This seems to be an issue for me with 11.9 as well. I had to downgrade to 11.8 to get it to work again.

With 11.10, continues to use so much cpu that my system is unstable...
I have to continue with the opensource driver without games sad

Indeed, for some time now I do not see any improvement in the driver.

OK… after looking at my Xorg log (sorry for not doing this before), I’ve found this :

So it look’s like the kernel module don’t match the driver. I only have one fglrx module. What driver it-is ? I’ve just update with pacman, and re-compile after the first fail.
What can-I check now ?

I upgraded from 11.8 to 11.10 and found that X crashed every time I resized konsole, in KDE 4.7.2. Downgraded to 11.8 and all is good again.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I can't get my mouse and keyboard working off of a fresh install. I added the [catalyst] repo and the [xorg19] as per the directions, I installed xf86-input-synaptics, and xf86-input-keyboard, and I ran the aticonfig --intitial. The result of trying to run startx as an unprivileged user is the twm interface without the ability to use my trackpad or my keyboard. My usb mouse doesn't work either. I have to do a hard reboot, since it is unresponsive to my ctrl+alt+F2 attempts. Excuse my inexperience, as this is my first amd/ati laptop, but I feel lost despite following the wiki's directions to a tee.

I think the preferred way of using keyboard and mouse (besides xf86-input-synaptics for touchpad) is using xf86-input-evdev.
Try this, works for me; but remove xf86-input-keyboard first and generate a new X.org configuration with aticonfig --initial.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I've upgraded to catalyst 11.10 yesterday and i have to say that i'm not satisfied at all!!
Maybe it is faster in 3D apps but for everyday use it simply doesn't works well. I can see a lot of artifacts and graphics error in gnome3 and chrome and i have the real impression that in the normal day use it is slower than opensource driver.

Artifacts? Graphics errors? GNOME 3? Who'd have thought that?

No, seriously. The X.org wiki says that radeon performs better when it comes to 2D acceleration, and I'd really enjoy the open source driver if its 3D capabilities weren't so ... immature. It's funny (or sad? dunno) that the official driver has these serious problems with GNOME Shell, since it's obviously better to use it when you want to, for example, play games. Hopefully 11.11 will behave significantly better - the version number just looks too great for it to be a bad piece of software.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I would happily switch to the opensource radeon driver, if my card would comply to the powersaving of the radeon driver; instead it freezes my laptop to be complete useless.
Nothing helped, even using the latest mesa/radeon/whatever-drivers built freshly from git. Sad thing is that I met a guy using Gentoo and the exact same card as mine with working powersave. Since this I do not trust ATI/AMD video cards anymore...

This has always been my problem too, my computer freezes when enabling powersaving with the radeon driver.

I have an Asus with HD4650
