Gnome shell unresponsive for a while on resume - ThinkPad T60

On resuming the laptop from suspend to ram there is a period of about 30-40 seconds where gnome-shell is unresponsive. By this I mean that the mouse still works and the cursor changes depending on what it is hovering over but the rest of the image on screen appears fixed. The shell wont respond to clicks or keyboard shortcuts. It is, however, possible to drop to the terminal using the ctrl+alt+f* keys.
There doesn't appear to be anything weird in /var/log/pm-suspend.log but I will post the contents here anyway:

Probably not really the same issue then I guess.

Re: Gnome shell unresponsive for a while on resume - ThinkPad T60

Same thing here.
No errors in the pm-suspend log.

I suspect network-manager but I don't know where I should look.
