[solved] Why wiki edits are timestamped in EDT?

Is it because the server is in N.Y. or something? It's just a minor gripe, but I'm curious why the edits are "signed" in EDT (i.e. UTC -4):

Rankmirrors section removed. Thanks Karen for the heads-up :-) -- Karol 07:51, 24 May 2011 (EDT)

but when I go to 'My contributions' I get the correct time (UTC +2), as I did set up in my preferences:

13:51, 24 May 2011 (diff | hist) Talk:Beginners' Guide  (→rankmirrors - not bash: Rankmirrors section removed until a new iso release.) (top)

Re: [solved] Why wiki edits are timestamped in EDT?

Signatures (~~~~) are converted to plain text when you save the page and are seen and edited by everyone. It would be confusing if everyone’s signatures were in their own different time zone, so I think the server uses its configured time zone for this.

I’d think UTC would be more reasonable for time stamps seen by everyone since I’m not going to remember what EDT is, and with UTC it’s easier to mentally add your own local time zone.

Guess what https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ta … yer_Daemon

pointone 21:59, 23 January 2010 (EST)
...
Jasonwryan 01:34, 7 December 2009 (EST)
...
n0stradamus 0:10 (CEST)

The last one is baffling - no date but a timezone?? Did he write it by hand? It's a fresh edit, I might actually ask him ;P
The previous two examples are rather old so maybe there was a change in the wiki config in the meantime as the latest edits by pointone, Jasonwryan and other people who previously used EST are now signed EDT.

EST and EDT is the same timezone but with the daylight saving time.

Another argument against using anything else than UTC in the timestamps ;P

Thanks.

Yes, please can we have UTC? Using EST/EDT is annoying and unnecessarily Amerocentric...

Sorry for resurrecting this thread, UTC signatures are now requested at https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/26737

Thanks!

Maybe this will motivate me to go through my notes and submit some more bug reports / feature requests ;P
