[Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

I have been unable to get suspend to ram to work.  Every attempt ends with the system freezing right at the end of the process with a blank screen and an unblinking cursor in the upper left corner.  I have checked the pm-suspend logs and there is no indication of any error.  I have tried pm-suspend and {echo "mem" > /sys/power/state} with there being no change in the results.

After going through the forum, I found a similar problem here and here.  Both of these indicated that the problem was the virtualbox module, but I do not have virtualbox installed.  Another suggestion from  these threads was the "iwlagn" module, but I didn't find this module listed in lsmod either.  I suspect from the behavior that it is indeed a module, but since pm-suspend log offers no hints on which it might be, I am at a loss as to how to resolve it.  Is there any way to figure this out than by suspending one module at a time and hard shutdown my computer from its failed suspend until I find the right one?

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

That is the second thread I linked to (first line of second paragraph).  I didn't find anything in that thread that would fix my problem.  The suggestions from that thread were:

Suspend vboxdrv module - which I don't have
Suspend kvm-intel - which I don't have
A problem with the 3.0 kernel (both individuals who mentioned this updated to resolve their issue)
Switch once the Intel 1000N wireless card (I have no idea what that means, but I also don't have an Intel wireless card)

So, yes, it does look a lot like the issue in that that thread, but none of the solutions in it have worked for me.

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

Hi,

Yesterday I got a TP-Link TL-WN851ND wireless network card with a  AR9287 chip set. This card relies on the ath9k module.

After I plugged in the card I get apparently random and complete system freezes, requiring hard reboots. rmmodding the ath9k module stops the system freezes, but this is of course not a great solution to the problem.

Maybe related? Are you able to suspend without ath9k loaded?

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

Just tried it.  modprobe -r ath9k then suspend still has same problem.  It really is looking like I'm going to have to go down the list and try to suspend each module.  Not looking forward to this.  I haven't had any other problems while using ath9k, no system freezes or anything.

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

hi,
i had the same freezing black screen with cursor problem.
which i solved by doing  a few things, don't know which did the trick because i was not interesting in testing yet:)
i am not sure which fixes are needed with current kernel:p

create:

#File: "/etc/pm/config.d/usb3-suspend-workaround".
SUSPEND_MODULES="xhci"

create & chmod +x:

#!/bin/sh
# File: "/etc/pm/sleep.d/20_custom-ehci_hcd".
case "${1}" in
        hibernate|suspend)
              # Unbind ehci_hcd for first device XXXX:XX:XX.X:
               echo -n "0000:00:1a.0" | tee /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/unbind
              # Unbind ehci_hcd for second device XXXX:XX:XX.X:
               echo -n "0000:00:1d.0" | tee /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/unbind
        ;;
        resume|thaw)
              # Bind ehci_hcd for first device XXXX:XX:XX.X:
              echo -n "0000:00:1a.0" | tee /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/bind
              # Bind ehci_hcd for second device XXXX:XX:XX.X:
              echo -n "0000:00:1d.0" | tee /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/bind
    ;;
esac

ofcourse you have to adjust  device id to suit your hardware.

You could also try to adding  resume line to kernel boot options and addind resume hook.

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

Thanks for the reply.  I'll try the suspend.  I'm not worried about resume hooks yet since i can't even get it to suspend in the first place.  And I thought the resume line for the kernel was only for hibernate (suspend to disk).  This is not something I use.

Have you tried  unbinding ehci_hcd devices? This is actually the fix which i only needed. smile

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

I got it to work!  Here is the /etc/pm/config.d/modules file I created:

SUSPEND_MODULES="ath9k mac80211 atl1c xhci_hcd ehci_hcd scsi_mod usbcore snd_pcm snd_timer ath9k_common ath9k_hw ath cfg80211 rfkill snd_hwdep snd_hda_codec_consexant snd_hda_codec_hdmi"

I decided my best course of action was to just take about half of the modules from lsmod and put them all in a suspend modules file.  I got lucky and the first half worked.  Now I just have to narrow down the list to the offending module and I've got myself a working suspend!

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

And the answer is...

usbcore!

I have no clue why this particular module had decided to cause me hell, but at least now I can suspend.  I've never even heard of this module causing problems, so maybe there is an issue with one of my usb's?  Possibly relating to my other problem with bluetooth?  Anyway, this topic is marked [solved].

Even simplier answer is ehci_hcd module, at least on my system. Could be xhci_hcd on yous.
usbcore loads others usb modules including ehci_hcd and xhci_hcd.

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

Ugh, yep, you are right.  It was ehci_hcd.  I had tried the sleep.d config you had suggested but couldn't get it to work.  I guess I didn't have the right device identifier.  But suspend_module ehci_hcd definitely marks it as the problem.  Does this indicate anything about my usb devices that I should look into?

Edit: Ah, only now do I see what I did wrong with your configuration.  What advantage is there to doing it your way with each usb device as opposed to just suspending the driver?

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

I gave both usbcore and ehci_hcd a try in the /etc/pm/config.d/modules file but no dice; I still get a black screen when going to suspend and just a blinking cursor at the top left.

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be of much help to you.  My solution consisted of "SUSPEND_MODULE="<abouthalfofmymodules>" and then seeing if I could suspend.  If I could, then I divided that count in half and tried again until I hit upon the solution.  Now, unknwn is right that after you have narrowed it down, you need to look at your lsmod output and see if the offending module is associated with any others and test those (like usbcore, which for me involved btusb, uvcvideo, xhci_hcd,and ehci_hcd, the last one being the actual offender).

It isn't a very graceful solution, but it was the only one that worked for me.  If you want to speed up the search, I would suggest making the first batch of suspend modules ones that already draw in several other modules.  Try snd and i2c_core.  Those pull in a lot of other modules.  If it works, then try just snd, and so on.

I laugh, yet the joke is on me

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

In my case it was rfkill.

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

Thanks a lot dear unknown and 'happy' clown,ur posts helped me a lot.
I merged all the modules listed by lsmod or hwdetect --modules since
i dont know the exact module to be loaded.
Now my laptop goes to sleep so me too.

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

I know the topic is closed but since you spent some time debugging this... On kernel 3+ echo mem >/sys/power/state is working perfectly except for that after wakeup it seems my / mount (a SD drive) is not healthy, in terminal I get "input/output error" for whatever command I try except a few for example "lsmod"

Is it possible that SD is remounted as read only? How can I debug this?

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

For future googlers : I had the same problem, after dichotomic search (clown's method) I found my suspect : rfkill...

Re: [Solved] Suspend to Ram hangs with blank screen

Also for future googlers: Same problem but I had no luck with the previous method, however a downgrade of the linux kernel from 3.5.4-1 => 3.5.3-1 solved it for now.
