[SOLVED] Thunar permission denied for all partitions excpt arch

Continuing conversion from other thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=128639
I made comments #14, #17, #19, & #22 in that thread that are relevant here.

rene wrote:

Earlier you said that you DID need to restore the .pacsave files to have things working, whereas you now say differently so I'll refrain from further comment. If you still have problems after removing all the .pkla files and after replacing SLiM with LXDM you have a different problem than the ConsoleKit one, which IS likely the only problem the thread-starter and the others in this thread are having. We should therefore get out of here so that they can get their problem fixed without this thread wandering off into all sorts of directions.

That is true, but a subsequent update broke it.

Here are the updates I made on 11/05  {I might not have logged out/logged in or rebooted after installing the updates on 11/05 before posting to the thread above on that date - or possibly I was in another OS when I posted my first comment on 11/05 in the thread above}

Subsequently (today) I installed gvfs to see if it made any difference, but it did not.

Re: [SOLVED] Thunar permission denied for all partitions excpt arch

Another user found a solution that works for me: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=129806

gamezelda wrote:

I solved it.

The Wiki page for Mounting for normal users with PCManFM tells to create a "/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/55-myconf.pkla" file specifying the privileges to grant to the user. The problem is that it does not include the privilege needed to mount internal drives (which was what I was trying to mount). To fix it, I added:

;org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount-system-internal

To the "Action=..." line..

EDIT:  Here is my revised /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/org.freedesktop.udisks.pkla

[Local Users]
Identity=unix-user:david
Identity=unix-group:disk
Action=org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount-system-internal
ResultAny=no
ResultInactive=no
ResultActive=yes

Went back to using SLiM with no ill effects.  As regular user using Thunar; I can now access partitions on my hard drive besides arch, I can access USB flashdrives, and I can access my optical drive (CDROM).  YMMV

If there's a bug in a package, you should open a bug report. If you only post on the forums, it may get overlooked.

I didn't mean this situation specifically. Generally, if you think the maintainer has done something incorrect, you should file a bug if there isn't one already.
Both upstream devs and Arch package maintainers sometimes make mistakes.

If you're unsure why something has been done (e.g. why was this patch removed), you can ask on the mailing list.

Just an exercise in futility as it turns out.  "everything you did is plain wrong." is what I was told.  Bug report closed as the developer who responded did not have that problem.  Good for him.

I think I'll just stick to the forums in the future...

Re: [SOLVED] Thunar permission denied for all partitions excpt arch

Polkit-gnome was the missing ingredient.  With polkit-gnome installed the udisks.pkla file is not required.  One difference between the usdisks.pkla fix and the polkit-gnome fix is that you are prompted for root's password to mount the drive.  No problem for me there - I prefer it that way.

I did not decipher from the bug report that polkit-gnome was required for thunar in Xfce - only perhaps for thunar in gnome.  I wish this had been made more clear in the bug report I filed.

The thunar maintainer for arch wrote: Remove org.freedesktop.udisks.pkla; mounting/unmounting of removable media should continue to function through gvfs.  No mention that polkit-gnome was required as well (for all desktops I imagine).  I already did have polkit installed - just not polkit-gnome.  Polkit was working, just missing some pieces for full functionality.

In the end, I consider it a bug if a dependency is not listed as required or optional.

Re: [SOLVED] Thunar permission denied for all partitions excpt arch

You'd think there'd be a polkit-xfce package since there is one for gnome and one for kde, but apparently it's not been developed yet, or it won't ever be.  I was just glad to find that polkit-gnome didn't have any dependencies that weren't already installed on the system.

Edit:  just noticed there is also a polkit package for LXDE that can be found in AUR, but still can't find a native one for Xfce:

Re: [SOLVED] Thunar permission denied for all partitions excpt arch

I filed a bug report (https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/26901) but it was closed because they say it's a configuration issue. It is not. My system used to work and it does not work anymore. Gnome-Polkit is running but it doesn't change anything :-(. Don't know what to do.

Re: [SOLVED] Thunar permission denied for all partitions excpt arch

@David Batson
Slim really has bug with permissions. If it started from rc.conf as daemon I can't mount any partitions of my hard disk. If it started from inittab, all OK (polkit-gnome installed, configuration files added).
Sorry, it was a configuration error. Both variants OK.

Re: [SOLVED] Thunar permission denied for all partitions excpt arch

I installed Arch in VirtualBox and did some tests. Mount can work without polkit-gnome, but config file always needed if I want to get access without type password. What is the true way for adding config file into the system? May be we need separate package like policykit-desktop-privileges from Ubuntu?

@David Batson
Can you ask Evangelos Foutras directly, why he did this change? How must we configurate our systems now? (I think my English not good enough for this.)

Re: [SOLVED] Thunar permission denied for all partitions excpt arch

According to the developer in the bug report I filed; there is no bug as it works for him.  I disagree, but I am not going to pursue this any further with the developers or maintainers.  I filed the bug report so that others were not hit with the same bug.  I already had a workaround for myself that got around the bug before I found out that polkit-gnome was the intended solution for a typical system.  When I was so quickly dismissed on arch bugzilla - I ask myself: "why bother to file a bug report on arch bugzilla?"  I don't need the aggravation.

Looking at this briefly, I think that one of the files in /etc/pam.d/ is where behavior is changed regarding regarding authorization now for polkit.

Re: [SOLVED] Thunar permission denied for all partitions excpt arch

i said multiple times, you do not need any polkit files to make automount work out the box. what you do there is a workaround to a missconfigured system. when i say missconfigured i mean in the way you start your xfce session

@lampslave a separate policykit-desktop-privileges is again a bad idea. What is a good idea is upstream to provide sane default rules: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41008

what those do is that any user being in "wheel" group is allowed to do stuff that only root can. mounting internal partitions, do system configures like networkmanager and so on, with or without a password prompt.

How can we get default rules? Will it included into polkit package? When?

maybe i wasn't clear enough.

default rules won't be the same as the workaround used in this thread. it will be a more generic one that only allows users to use their own password if they are in wheel group. That's all

Re: [SOLVED] Thunar permission denied for all partitions excpt arch

So the things suggested here are a bad idea and you tell me this is not a bug. Then what can I do? Automount used to work. It still does work when I start a new X server session but it does not work after a clean restart. I did not change anything on my system. Why is it "missconfigured" now when it used to be configured properly a few weeks ago?

Re: [SOLVED] Thunar permission denied for all partitions excpt arch

I am sensing a mixup here.

1. For those of you who can't mount EXTERNAL media (aka usb flash drives), please try to understand what the policy kit is and stop hacking every possible conf file in /etc. XFCE pkla files should have been removed long time ago because they were added when xfce didn't work well with *kit. You need 0 udev rules, 0 pkla files only thunar + gvfs + udisks + deps. On a xfce desktop you only need:

$ pacman -Qq | gr gnome
gnome-icon-theme
gnome-icon-theme-symbolic
libgnome-keyring
libsoup-gnome

plus dconf. That's it.

2. INTERNAL partitions (like /dev/sda69 on your HDD) are a different story, because accessing them might represent a security risk. It's plain stupid to enter root passwd or add your user to a wheel group every time you have to mount this partition, because it's an unnecesary priviledge escalation. Why is it you want to mount/unmount such partition 7 times a day? Usually fstab is utilized for these things. Alternatively, google "arch linux policykit" to include a 3 line file into your /etc/polkit-1, but  please lock it down.

@cpcgm: Your problem is not a bug because of 1. and 2.
