looking for a filemanager program

started using fluxbox recently, and currently on the lookout for a good filemanager program...

i was using gnome before fluxbox so naturally i tried to switch back to nautilus, but somehow icon graphics dont display correctly in fluxbox when i call nautilus... its a real pain in the butt when u cant see whether an entry is a folder or a file. Is there anyway to make it display correctly?

tried rox, but it doesnt seem to be able to copy/paste multiple files using CTRL+C? i dont like the way the clicking works too(i use list view and theres a small "space" between 2 rows which i dont like). also is there a location bar inbuilt for it? messed around with the options but didnt find one...

I also tried xffm, but i dont like how the the show hidden files function works for it, and the lack of a consistent location bar.

So i ended up using konqueror even though i dont use kde. I like it, but i would prefer to use a less bloated (konqueror is also a web browser)program. Other alternatives i tried include krusader which is quite similar to konqueror in many aspects.

Ultimately i'm looking for a filemanager which works similar to konqueror/nautilus, but less bloated... any recommendations?

you need a session manager running for icons in nautilus, so you have to run gnome-settings-daemon, or xfce-mcs-manager.

these have the nice side effect of letting you set your GTK theme easily too.

krusader and mc are the only filemanagers I use, and leave very little to be desired.

found out about xfe after searching thru the forums abit more...

compiled it with the PKGBUILD in AUR and seems to be what i'm looking for so far...

thanks for the gnome daemon tip

EDIT: no way to config keybindings? thats bad...

You can try endeavour. I've put a PKGBUILD in AUR. It has keybindings.

I try many alternatives but keep going back to konqueror, it's the only one that does everything I want, the way I want it! (just like I try many distros but keep coming back to Arch!!)

Oh yes it is, and saves you tons of typing when running without X... but of course it works great under X as well, and its virtual filesystem is IMHO much more practical than say GnomeVFS.

It takes a few days to get used to Rox, but it's really good once you've spent some time with it. Xfe is my second choice.

I like ROX. What irritates me is that good icon themes for it are almost impossible to come by.

You could try Evidence I suppose... That is one cool file manager, and seems to come with awesome icons by default.

Add my votes for mc and rox. For trees, flip a coin between endeavour and xfe, but I don't much care for either. For a graphical dual pane, if mc doesn't suit, there's emelfm2 - get the devel. Neither are in Arch, though, but the build couldn't be easier. No need at all to run a Knome fi Knome file manager in a wm. Gunks up the works.

Yeah, it's cool, but by now I like mc ... when evidence becomes totally and 100% usable, I'm gonna use it ... so far I can't even copy,create or move a directory or file!, that's not a file manager

Those screenshots do look very nice. Maybe Thunar will turn out to finally be a decent GUI file manager to displace rox.

i tried going back to nautilus using gnome-settings-daemon and the icons did come back. I got a new problem though. Sometimes when i close nautilus, the window closes but the process still runs in the background. When that happens i cant open anymore new nautilus windows until i manually kill them off using the kill command. It happens 70% of the time and i'm getting very annoyed... what could be causing this?

switched back to konqueror for the time being... anyone knows how exactly does the --preload option for konqueror work? does it mean that if i run

konqueror --preload (once)
i get a faster startup for the next konqueror session? what if i start a 2nd new konqueror window, does the preload option still affect it? and what if i close both, and start a new one again, will the preload option still have an effect?

thunar looks pretty nice but not usable yet though =

It's really too bad xffm didn't work out because somebody obviously put lots of work into it. I quickly found it to be far too slow and clumsy to work with on a regular basis.

After a few days of getting familiar with ROX, it seemed to fall right into place with XFCE4. I, too, have been watching Thunar for a while now and am anxious to see it in action.

Thunar's not usable yet because it's under development, it hasn't even been released as a beta or to subversion (although there are some development snapshots you can try out). I've played around with it a bit and it's very snappy so far and quite intuitive. I too find that there is a void in the file manager department and thunar seems like it will fit it for most people... I can't wait for it to get finished.

As for rox, it's such a clunky, quirky, unintuitive app - I can't stand it. Maybe it fits in xfce because it's fast, but that's about all it has going for it.

correct me if i'm wrong, but the best way to use rox seems to be using icon view and extensive use of click-n-drag stuff according to some docs i've read...

i'm used to a list-view way of doing things so cant get used to rox... the lack of multiple copying of files is a big drawback to me.
