gnome volume control

What is the current official way to set volume in GNOME?
I have my audio configured with alsamixer, but when I play sound in gnome-terminal (by hitting invalid key for instance) volume is changed to some other value and I can't find where it is stored.
I was searching for gnome-volume-control but it doesn't exist.
I have gnome-media installed.
What package should I install or what application should I run to configure volume in GNOME?
