I just installed openoffice and was surprised to see that it installs a lot of .desktop files.

What's the issue here? Does Gnome/KDE not look in /usr/share/applications for .desktop files? Wouldn't that be enough? (In Xfce, I now have .desktop files in 'Office' and 'Open Office 1.1.4'. Annoying.)

yeah /usr/share/applications should be enough AFAIK

Should I file a bug about this then? Or is there a way I could fix the package myself (to submit a patch)?

what's the problem with those files?
they get isntalled during oo install itself so i let them in the package.
and they don't hurt at all.

probably because the KDE and GNOME specific ones are no longer required, as they are both pretty much freedesktop.org XDG menu compliant now. I think it's causing extra menu items in his XFCE if I read correctly.

well yes but you'll get errorrs during install then, that's the reason for letting them in the package

Are you saying the problem is upstream? If so, perhaps it wouldn't be a good idea to mess with the package, but I could always go complain to the OOo people.

for oo2 this is already solved in 1.1.5 i don't think so but hey it's not a real problem isn't it?

Well, it kind of is and kind of is an kind of isn't, they should wither be XDG compliant or not - but not both
Not your fault tho tpowa
