I updated with an yaourt -Syu (hmm, maybe I should be doing -Syua, but I don't think this would matter for this particular problem), and am no longer able to get into X with the Catalyst drivers. The error I get in kernel.log is the familiar "BUG: scheduling while atomic: X/4580/0x00000002", with the number after the "X/" changing each time. The actual desired action would be for X to start, which it doesn't.
The major change from the update was that the kernel was upgraded. Currently, I have the following packages installed:
xorg-server 1.10.4-1
linux 3.1.1-1
catalyst-utils 11.10-1
catalyst-hook 11.10-3
I frequently run "aticonfig --initial". Sometimes it duplicates entries in xorg.conf (if I was previously using vesa, which is my current working backup option, it sometimes ends up still using vesa because it just makes alternate Monitor and Device entries and doesn't change the Screen entry properly, iirc), but those are easily fixed.
I have also tried using catalyst and catalyst-generator instead of catalyst-hook I don't remember if I tried catalyst-daemon, but I suspect that it might not have any better luck. I may try intalling the alternate version of xorg-server that's in the catalyst repository (xorg-server-catalyst-maximize-fix).
For what it's worth, in my xorg.conf, I have xorg110 then catalyst at the top
I've noticed that this isn't an amazingly common error, so I may be doing something incredibly wrong. But if not, then does anyone here know a good repository I could add to force a deinstall to 2.6? There are several listings in the Unofficial User Repositories with various versions of the 2.6 kernel, but I'd prefer an informed suggestion over just randomly adding one.
Also, let me know if there's a better forum for this particular problem. I zeroed in on the kernel forum because that's where the error popped up.
Edit: As for hardware, the motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-880GMA-USB3. Northbridge is an 880G, which apparently integrates a Radeon HD 4250.
