I have to explain a little about my setup of course. It's Dell Inspiron 1501 with a dual core processor and 2GB RAM. Normally I run it using an external 19" wide format monitor. I use a KVM switch to switch between a couple different computers. I'm trying to install onto an external usb hard drive. When I boot off the X86-64 CD using my external monitor it boots fine and the display is good. However for the installation boot, I was trying to Use the laptop's monitor with the install instructions on another computer in the 19" external. As far as the laptop was concerned, there was no external monitor. The CD starts to boot fine but, when it gets to the end, it seems to pick a resolution that the laptop monitor can't display and the screen goes all vertical lines. The highest resolution the laptop can take is 1024X768. When I look at the hardware detection, it shows available resolutions much higher than that. The output from lspci -v (in Mint) with the external monitor attached is below. I didn't have the usb hard drive attached when I got it. Any suggestions on how to get around this?

Sorry, I'll remember the \[code\] tags from now on. Thanks for replying anyway.
I've looked in the wikis but, I can't find how to do that. I'm not getting to a prompt before it happens during the boot. I did try hitting tab which does give me the command line that starts the boot process. I can also hit escape and get to a boot: prompt. If it can be done, I assume it can be done one of those places. I don't mind reading the docs. A pointer to the right one for this would help though.
I did try noload=KMS in both places. At the boot prompt. It didn't like it. At the end of the line you get with tab, it took it but, I still had the same problem.
