Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Updating using http://germ.winpe.com/archlinux/mate/i686/ repo gives the following error:

error: failed to prepare transaction (package architecture is not valid)
:: package mate-file-manager-2011.11.10-2-x86_64 does not have a valid architecture

Looks like the entire database file http://germ.winpe.com/archlinux/mate/i686/mate.db is for x86_64 and not i686.

Actually, I don't see a 32-bit  mate-file-manager-2011.11.10 package. The last updates to the 32-bit repo are still from 02-Nov even though the db is from 12-Nov.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

I am just updating the germ.winpe.com server.
The x86_64 64bit repo is done and should be fine. Seemed to work okay for me but let me know if you have any problems.

I am in the process of updating the i686 32bit repo right at this moment and I will edit this post as soon as it is done.

EDITED: 15-11-2011 19:11 : The i686 32bit repo has now been updated and should work fine.

Sorry for problems and lack of action I have been unwell for a few days.

Clive.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Not sure if there's something wrong with your repo or not. It might just be something wrong with my setup, but I ran pacman -Ss mate to see if there was anything new added and it didn't list "mate-desktop-environment" as installed.... I ran pacman -S mate-desktop environment and got this long series of errors:

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Hello,
Yesterday after the update of mate repository, I installed mate. But I have a problem : when I put on my desktop the battery applet it says to me:
Can't access ACPI events in /var/run/acpid.socket! Make sure the ACPI subsystem is working and the acpid daemon is running.

But my  acpid daemon is running

Can you Help me?

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

@Perberos: I'm I missing something or is mate.db missing for moth x86_64 and i686? Also, the repository is INSANLY slow? Would it be an option to prohibit access to your main repository for the general public and redirect everybody to one of the mirrors? When trying to mirror your server I only get about 1-40 kb/s and downloads often fail (takes more than two or three repetitions to download a 4 MB file because download stucks at some point)...

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

While I commend the guy whos hosting this massive project for his balls of steel, I think the problems in this thread are an indication of why its generally a good idea to move on to a currently developed desktop. It sucks for sure; while I like OB, LXDE, and XFCE myself, Gnome 2 had its merits and I genuinely believe it to be at least 4 million times better than Gnome 3.

In regards to the above guy who has problems with "exists in filesystem", you can use -Sf (force- overwrites conflicts). You definitely should pay very close attention to what you are overwriting, but from time to time it can be necessary.

**EDIT** Aaaaaannd nevermind about -Sf- it looks as if it was resolved by the head man himself..

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Actually, considering how new the project is, Mate has been surprisingly stable. The only problem that got in my way was the crashing in Caja and that's since been fixed and even before it was fixed clpc provided a temporary solution that worked fine. I'm happy with Mate. I never really liked any other DE besides Gnome 2 (Xfce is ok, but... meh...). I like Openbox, but I prefer to run stand alone window managers on a laptop or netbook. I just don't like having them on my desktop.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Just guessing: Is the daemon really running? Does the file exist? Do you have permissions to read it? If that's  not the issue, either wait for perberos or another dev or try asking at the irc channel.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

@ schneida

About your speed problems. I don't even use the servers at matsusoft due to slow speeds and common down time, it's not actually listed in the Mate archwiki entry anymore, so I'm assuming it's advised against using it unless you're setting up your own repo. Here's my Mate entry in my /etc/pacman.conf file:

[mate]
Server = http://germ.winpe.com/archlinux/mate/$arch
Server = ftp://tridex.net/mate/$arch

My download speeds are pretty good with these. Hope that helps your speed issue.

@ blindevil

Is acpid installed? try running "pacman -S acpid" and/or make sure acpid is loaded in your deamons line in your /etc/rc.conf file

To manually start it run "/etc/rc.d/acpid start"

Not sure what do you meant here, some people had ideas for a distributed package manager, but I don't recall seeing any code.
You can create a torrent with the new packages but as far as I can tell, you've got some fast mirrors and the problem is that it takes a looong time for them to sync from the master server.

@Mr_ED-horsey: thanks for the answer. Acpid is correctly installed, I put it in my Daemons array. And it start at the init of the system. If I do ls -l /var/run/ | grep acpid:

srw-rw-rw- 1 root root         0 Nov 16 19:30 acpid.socket

Mate sounds like something you can drink.

After posting I googled Mate and it's indeed something you can drink see wiki.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mate_%28beverage%29

Sorry my English is bad.

WTF are you... on drugs? if it was called simple (Which is used in other projects) or users? LOL, a hella lot more peeps would ask "why is it called this and not mate, say?".

Seriously, that was one of the more uesless things posted on arch.

Oh... and I have been notching down notes for myself on a distributed package manager yes. Good to see others have this in mind. I started thinking of it because I was thinking of a way of finding, verifying and sharing native vs. generic flagged compiled binaries smile

Just finished updating the germ.winpe.com repos @ 17:17GMT on the 17-11-2011.

Honestly it really did finish at 17:17 on the 17th.... spooky.

I just did a -Syy -Syu on the 64 bit and all went well.
