It may have been because I was using too much memory. When it crashed, I was simultaneously launching Chromium and a VirtualBox Windows 7 VM, while also running Firefox, Deluge, and JDownloader. I only have 4 GB RAM.
Following the crash, SLiM automatically restarted.
Is there any way to confirm this was the problem, or find out what it was otherwise?

First step in debugging: can you reproduce the crash?
Offline
It just happened again. AFAICT, the only noticeable factor is high RAM usage. It was at 3.19 GB when it froze up this time, just as I was starting VirtualBox with a lot of other apps already running.

Do you mean X is leaking? If so, do you see any leakage during some particular application work or just if you use X for some time?

Do you mean X is leaking?
No, I don't think that's the case. For example, the two crashes that I provided logs for had X running for 12 and 24 hours, respectively, prior to crashing. It doesn't seem like it's more likely the longer the machine has been running, unless the application leaking memory is Firefox (which is very likely).
If so, do you see any leakage during some particular application work or just if you use X for some time?
The high memory usage seems to be a result of running a lot of applicaitons that use a lot of memory, such as VirtualBox, Firefox, Deluge, and JDownloader.
I've attempted to alleviate the problem by reducing the memory available to my Windows 7 VM from 1024 MB to 768 MB, but I don't know how much that will help.
Are the two logfiles of no help in diagnosing the problem?
Offline
The problem might be in a driver. The same kind of problem was mentioned more than a year ago, but could be the reason. For further information, refer to gentoo forum and to mailing list archive : gentoo. If that doesn't help, your
# dmesg # after crash
# lspci
# lsusb
# lsmod
May be helpful
