Gnome session will not start[Solved]

On my new install, GDM loads and looks fine but when I enter the user password, I get the error message "Failed to load session "gnome". Possibly related is below the computer icon on GDM, it says (none) and the terminal prompts read USER@(none). I did set my hostname in the config file. Does anyone have any idea? Thank you.

This is a custom built machine with multiple hard disks. Let me know if specific additional information would be helpful. Thank you.

Re: Gnome session will not start[Solved]

Two points:
- Have you rebooted after setting the hostname?
- You can try to login into a fallback session (not that with old GNOME but that with just a terminal/console) and then run "gnome-session". In the console you can watch the output of the command to know the specific problem.

Re: Gnome session will not start[Solved]

I have rebooted since setting the hostname in both rc.conf and the hosts file. I tried to run gnome-session in xterm and the following came:

gnome-session[3156]: WARNING: Session 'gnome' runnable check failed: Exited with code 1
gnome-session[3156]:  WARNING: Unable to find default provider 'notification-daemon' of required provider 'notifications'
gnome-session[3156]: WARNING: Unable to find required component 'gnome-panel'

Re: Gnome session will not start[Solved]

It seems you don't have "gnome-shell" or "gnome-panel". Did you install "gnome" group (pacman -S gnome)?

Re: Gnome session will not start[Solved]

I though I did but I tried that and it appears I did not. It now works except for 3d acceleration which I purposely have not added yet

Thanks. Any idea about the hostname?

Re: Gnome session will not start[Solved]

Dunno, check if "/etc/rc.conf" has the following line:

HOSTNAME="something"

Be careful not to have any space, spaces break variable assignation.
