Yes I have. I have no problems using 3.0 kernel. When I upgrade to a 3.1 kernel I cannot get X to start, just hangs at a black screen.
Before starting X check this commands:
lsmod | grep fglrx
lsmod | grep rad
and those files for errors:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
~/.xsession-errors
Maybe switch to xorg-server 1.11, or go back to 1.10

Up and running with Catalyst 1.11 with Gnome Shell! Moving windows is sluggish, fortunately I almost always run everything maximised, and using the Gnome menus (i.e. its animations) causes severe screen tearing.
But hey, at least my graphics card (HD 4870) isn't turning its fan on and off to keep its temperature stable. fglrx keeps it running steady at around 35% speed (which pretty much is noiseless).

Upgraded xorg-server to 1.11, and it worked! Thanks.
Now, to figure out why chromium won't start all of a sudden!

I'm tried to install catalyst-utils-11.3 and xorg-server 1.11.2-2. I put 'nomodeset' to grub.cfg.
I initiliazied with:

`mplayer -vo xv` crashes X server here. With `-vo vaapi' it's fine. But it only plays X264 encoded videos fine, when trying to play an ogg one the frame rate acts weird --- first fine, then fall to zero, then fine again, and to zero again, and fine, and so on. (using mplayer-vaapi from [community])
Offline
AFAIK xvba-video backend hasn't developed anymore, as AMD open-sourced only part of it and it's main developer went to AMD from splitted-desktop. Open-sourced xvba-video sucks even more.
I think xvba-video will be dead, as AMD/ATI guys now trying to implement acceleration in it's open-sourced radeon driver and got some success recently.
Unless they will open all XVBA specs it will be dead, bugs wont get fixed.

@Vi0L0:
Due to some bug in catalyst_build_module, I get a package called `catalyst-` for my customized kernel. The kernel modules for this `catalyst-` package is installed to /lib/modules/fglrx.ko.gz, whereas `modprobe fglrx` did load /lib/modules/3.1.0-vanilla/extramodules/fglrx.ko.gz and therefore the wrong version of the catalyst driver which resulted in deactivated DRI.
Manually moving the wrong-placed module resolved that issue, but the bug (is it one? uname -r gives the right output) in catalyst_build_module is there.
Just wanted to inform you guys.

It's as simple as adding 2 lines into config:
vo=vaapi:gl
va=vaapi
Didn't work for me (mplayer didn't appear on screen), but this did:
vo=vaapi:gl2

Yep, it does look like a bug, can you please send me an e-mail (i don't want to bump this thread too much) with some more informations, like:
- output of `catalyst_build_module` when you are building the catalyst package for your kernel;
- output of commands:
ls -al /lib/modules
ls -al /lib/modules/`uname -r`

For me this version is a true catastrophe… as usual
First, I lost my French keybord (set via gnome-control-center, but English in gdm) but get it back via the old setxkbmap on each boot. But i suppose it’s linked to xorg, not fglrx.
The compilation went fine, the fglrx module is loaded.
In my Xorg.0.log I have this :

For me it's showing:
[ 14.726] (II) fglrx(0): Name: fglrx
[ 14.726] (II) fglrx(0): Version: 8.91.4
[ 14.726] (II) fglrx(0): Date: Oct 25 2011
[ 14.726] (II) fglrx(0): Desc: ATI FireGL DRM kernel module
so yes, i guess there's some problem with module. Try to install newer version of xorg-server. Be sure you have updated all catalyst packages into newest versions, eventually reinstall all of them :-)
Edit: one more thing - if you are using catalyst-{daemon,generator,hook,total} then use commands:
catalyst_build_module remove_all
catalyst_build_module all
Last command isn't working in daemon.

Not sure if this is the right place, but here goes. The ati 11.11 with X.org 1.11.2 also results in an X crash in combination with skype video calling. Changing MPlayer output to gl, gl2 works nice, as reported here before. However, any ideas on how to switch the skype video to gl/gl2?

Thank’s a lot for your help, but I don’t build my own kernel. I don’t have a /lib/modules/fglrx.ko.gz. After a « locate fglrx.ko » I only get « /lib/modules/extramodules-3.1-ARCH/fglrx.ko ».
@Vi0L0 : I’ve tried catalyst_build_module remove_all then pacman -R catalyst-hook, all seem’s ok. After an updatedb and locate, I can’t find any fglrx.ko. Then I’ve rebuild it from yaourt -S catalyst-hook, the fglrx is at the same place…

I don’t want to spam you so you can have a look at my Xorg.0.log here : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/241043/Div/Xorg.0.log as you can see, it seem’s that some modules (libfglrxdrm.so) are in 8.91.4 version but kernel module is still 8.90.5

I have the same problem, but I have a feeling that it could be related more to Xorg than catalyst. But it's only a feeling...
I'd like to use open drivers too, but the stopping missing feature is power management, as always. Open driver is still a battery killer respect to catalyst. Also, I found that it is much slower with a dual monitor setup (my work configuration).
