Laptop Total Freeze After Less Than a Minute in Gnome 3

Today I wanted to install Arch on my laptop, so I installed it dual-booting with Windows 7. Unfortunately, after it runs for about 1 minute in Gnome the entire computer freezes and does not respond.

I am using the current X11 with xf86-input-synaptics and nvidia drivers.

Laptop Specs Are:

Core 2 Duo 1.83Ghz
4 GB of Ram
2 HDD (1 SSD, and 1 SATA)
Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTS

I'm still new with Arch (or linux for that matter). Any help would be appreciated.

Post some logs: kernel, dmesg, xorg, x logs.
Find out if freezing happens only in X environment or console environment too.

Re: Laptop Total Freeze After Less Than a Minute in Gnome 3

I have an issue that sounds similar. It happens every time I log in now, after about one minute. The computer stop responding to keyboard and mouse gestures, but I do not get the impression that the computer has otherwise frosen. I use KDE and KWin as the window manager. One of the last things I did was to install the new kernel. If I log into failsafe mode, everything works fine and dandy.

I was first thinking it was the nvidia driver so I switched to nouveau, but that gave me all sorts of issues. I guess I'm not experienced enough, because I could hardly log in at all (had to add nomodeset to the kernel line in grub). I have now installed the proprietary nvidia driver again.

I have a macbook pro 5. gen, with nvidia video card and c2d processor. I run the 64bit version. I know the /var/log/ is a good place to start looking for problems, but I don't understand the messages. Any suggestions on what to look for?

On a completely unrelated note I've figured out that my macbook won't boot from cd anymore, so if Arch completely fails on me at any point from now on I'm basically f*** sad

While waiting for suggestions I'll try some different window managers to see if it is related to KWin.

I have now tested enlightenment and I do not have any problems. That is, until I start Kontact, which I guess would start loading Akonadi. Since Akonadi is automatically loaded if I use KWin, I am guessing the problem (for me) is related to Akonadi. I have probably managed to screw something up.

Re: Laptop Total Freeze After Less Than a Minute in Gnome 3

Update: I saw that a new Nvidia driver 290.10 was released so I gave it a go to see if it crashes. I removed the xorg.conf file and regenerated a config using nvidia-xconfig. So far so good. I am using the "Prefer Maximum Performance" option in the nvidia control panel under PowerMizer.

eothred, Try starting Kontact in the CLI to see if it punches out error messages. The KDE Terminal Emulator is Konsole if your not sure what to use.

Re: Laptop Total Freeze After Less Than a Minute in Gnome 3

Yes enzo, I've already tried it several times, but I could not see anything in particular in the output. Thanks for the suggestion though.

In any case, my problem is most likely not related even though I also have an nvidia card, so I've added it to one of the bug reports at bugs.kde.org: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=240981

Re: Laptop Total Freeze After Less Than a Minute in Gnome 3

Hmm, wondering if the problem might be more fundamental, related to the upgrade to 3.1 perhaps. I have just figured out that if I run "git svn rebase" on a git mirror of a svn repository that I have, the desktop freeze in exactly the same manner.

When the computer locks up, I cannot log in through ssh neither, so it is a complete freeze I guess, not just keyboard/screen/mouse locking up.

Have anyone heard of crashes due to upgrade to 3.1 specifically? Or does anyone have a different suggestion? I have Intel integrated graphics on my desktop, so it is most likely not related to the video card.
