GNOME 3 seemed too "bloated" for my aspire one... I decided to give openbox a shot:

Tint2, conky and wbar. Composition enabled via xcompmgr. Screenshots done with a script I made that takes the screenshot, displays a notification via notify-osd, opens it with gpicview and puts it in the desktop. It's amazing to see what you can do with a little patience and lightweight apps. File manager is pcmanfm (it also renders the desktop icons) and theme is faenza-cupertino.
Thanks yzzo for the conkyrc file, I could tweak mine to show what I wanted.

Trying out a minimal setup. Stalonetray, conky, and terminal.

I'm really liking that, I think I'm going to go a bit more in this direction.

I always wanted to try running openbox without a panel (only systray), and so far it's working realy nice. Although, I will perhaps try a minimal tint2 instead of stalonetray in openbox dock, since it's not behaving like I want.
ps. Be sure to post some screenshots of your progress.

yep lxpanel for panel and dock, lxrandr for monitor resolution and lxappearance for setting gtk themes and fonts

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for a matching gtk2 / gtk3 / openbox theme? I've tried hope but it seems quite erratic with gedit.

Zukitwo, both gtk2, gtk3 and openbox theme.

That looks fantastic! Please upload the config files.

By config files, I presume you are talking about conky. I don't have those exact configs left, but I post the slightly modified ones.
