Hey,
UPDATE
It seems this problem is caused by the nvidia proprietary drivers. I just changed to nouveau today, and the problem is gone
UPDATE
it should be noted, that I now realize that it has nothing to do with gnome-terminal; it happens also in urxvt and other terminals I have tested, so perhaps its a problem with ncurses?
I run Gnome 3 on my Arch box, and I have a problem with gnome-terminal which I havent had on any other installation of any other distro.
gnome-terminal will sometimes (quite often actually if it runs a heavy - e.g. curses - program like irssi and identicurse) not redraw output correctly. It will leave "artifacts" having around, and sometimes its actually most of the screen that are leftovers from "the last" and maybe only 1% that has been properly updated. Also when i press the tab key for autocomplete and theres nothing to autocomplete (so it fails), the whole terminal will go grey.
When these things occur, i need to manually tell the terminal to redraw itself.
I am using GNU Screen by default on my terminal, and when i use irssi, it is, as always, in a screen which connects to my server which reattaches a running screen where irssi runs inside. One could think the problem where therein, but I have tested it from all ends - even creating a new user and opening irssi locally in a gnome-terminal - but this just keeps happening.
Any idea to how I can get it fixed?

Okay I know this is [solved], but is there anyway to solve this without installing nouveau? I don't know why, but nouveau is sooo slow. I can't even play YouTube videos smoothly, or some dvb recordings with mplayer. I know my computer is old, maybe nouveau is alright is you have a new one..

Yeah would also like a an answer without having to resort to nouveau.....

I had a similar issue. Nouveau doesn't support my hardware, then I added the following line in /etc/environment. My issue is improved.

. . . 3 years later your answer is still good. Just installed Fedora 22 on my Lenovo T420 and I saw the redraw issue mostly on my second monitor (using the Nvidia hardware). I added your mod to /etc/environment and rebooted. No more redraw problem.
