Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi guys, this is my first post here. I been using Linux since 1998. Anything from Suse to Debian, wish I was using until one week ago when I discovered Arch Linux. Man what a great distribution it is! I never got to utilize my knowledge with any of the other distros because I got used to the UI (Yes I know is bad). But with Arch I started to use my knowledge a learned everything that I was missing. Fun, fun fun. I am so happy and proud that I register to this forum, the wiki and the planet. Just, thanks for just a great distro and you can count with me for development and graphic design ( I am a web developer and multimedia designer) wink

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello Everyone!
I am Gentoo user for years... I have been looking for a binary distro that meets my criteria:
1> choices during and of the installation process
2> available packages and packaging system features ( DOWN / up-grading / handling of dependencies )
3> forums & wiki
4> not RedHat family
got Arch! - great binary distro with a very nice approach right at the beginning  ( installation ) - nice features of pacman - VERY nice Arch Wiki - forums look very fine also...
So far I am impressed - got Arch ( primary and only OS ) on my laptop ( core2duo ) - I could customize what many of other distros would not allow me to do during the installation phase... moved some of customized settings from my gentoo box ( profiles/configs etc ) and the system was up and running on <XFCE>, KDE, and E17 within a hour, than some customizations ( downgraded kernel to 2.39 - I am not ready for 3.0.x ) and it is ready to rock'n roll...

very cool!

paziul

ps: the kernel seems to be a bit heavy, initrd is not a must, should be no problem of trimming it... but this is expected and common

Welcome to Arch from a recovering Gentoo user wink I still like Gentoo, but I really enjoy Arch.  Once you get comfortable, consider a custom kernel starting either from ABS or the AUR.  As a Gentoo user, you will feel right at home.  I run a custom kernel with all the built-ins I need, and -march set to my kernel; all with no initrd (Just like I did on Gentoo).

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi! I consider myself a Linux newbie in general, previously I was using Debian (about a year) and a week ago I switched to Arch. I was amazed by the support and the Doc's quality, I have been able to fix everything that has come up with the wiki, except one thing that I'm going to post on the networking forum after this (I didn't want to be rude and begin asking questions without introducing myself tongue)

Again, I think I'm a linux newbie because I haven't gone deeper on the OS, I've been just using it as a Programmer, but not even writing apps for the system. Now I wish to change that and help in any way I can and the first step was installing apps, since from what I've read, it's the best Distro for learning without sacrificing usability.

So, hello! smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello all I'm a convert from windows, tried ubuntu but it sounds funny and the gui's gross to me and debian seems to ... fat? anyway I've been using arch for about half a year now so why not join the group? also... the AUR packages get blocked by my router somehow... i've taken my laptop to public places and it works fine but if i'm home it slaps my AUR package building (as well as wget).  PS i agree the wikis are the best.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello! I used ubuntu for a few years, just decided to switch over when I realized that anytime I searched online for a problem solution, i'd say a good 60% of the times I found the solution either on the Arch forums or wiki, so once I finally got fed up with the bloat of ubuntu and decided to have a go at somewhat starting from scratch, it was pretty much a no brainer to go with Arch. I've had it installed for about a week now and I'm already so impressed with it, I read the pacman man page, and let's just say i'm more than happy to get away from .deb for good. Thanks for the hard work guys.

AHOY! Been using Ubuntu for over a year. Fascinated with Linux in general and I wanted to install Arch to become more 'intimate' with Linux. Looking forward to some great learning experiences. So.......yeah........ArchON!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi everyone!
I've been a linux user for quite some time (7 or 8 years, I think). It started way back when, after several failed attempts to learn and start using linux, I tried to install Gentoo dual-boot with windows, and had to resize my windows partition (which took up all my HDD) to fit linux along it. After resizing it with Partition Magic, windows wouldn't boot and, instead of trying to fix it, as I would usually do, I just said "whatever", erased all my partitions with all my data, and installed Gentoo alone, without windows. After that, I have been switching back to windows a few times (because of games and some heavy software I needed for university), and switching different distributions - sometimes I wanted something lightweight (puppy linux and others), sometimes something quite different than other distros (for example, sabayon) and sometimes - something that would easily "just work" (for example, Ubuntu or SUSE). Yet still, I always craved for something that would give me more control over my system. In this regard, I have used gentoo linux, slackware and even managed to set up a working LFS system (although I didn't have the patience or nerves to get Xorg to work on it). Most of the time, gentoo linux fulfilled my needs and, being a slight perfectionist, the compilation of every package gave me a nice, warm sensation inside (meaning - it's ok that it takes 24 hours to compile/install my chosen DE, since afterwards it probably would start up 1 second faster than just installing binaries). Well, as time went, I finally realized that it really makes no visible difference and the hassle to set everything up and maintain it is just too much, since when compiling everything and trying to optimize it, you tend to run into problems that noone else has - there's just too many variables. Finally, about a month ago, I found arch linux, which seems a perfect solution for me - I have control of everything, configuration is (comparatively) easy, everything installs lightning-fast and the wiki documentation is GREAT (maybe even better than gentoo, which, I find, is the greatest strenght of that distribution).

So now I have set up my home computer, my work computer, my (very old) laptop and a server with Arch. Too bad my workplace insists on using Ubuntu for the servers (I'm a linux sysadmin there)..

And on that note, this post has become much larger than I thought it would be, so.. Hello! smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello Fellow Archers,  I have been a Linux fan for some years now, but never went Linux only. I have used Ubuntu, mint, fedora, pclinuxos, crunchbang, slitaz, zenwalk, salix... just to name a few. I have been a distro-hopper and I thought I had the ultimate OS when I installed crunchbang [I love Openbox], but that did not last long, I went back to ubuntu and was stuck there till 11.10 came out [hated Unity, gnome3 lagged, openbox rocked as usual!] but I was not satisfied still as hte distro itself was bloated, so after giving it a lot of thought, I decided to give the so famed Arch linux a go, now I am cursing myself for not taking this decision years back. Completely wiped my HDD along with the windows 7 and windows 8 preview and have ONLY arch installed now [my Windows needs being taken care by Virtualbox], really loving the experience here, excellent documentation and very helpful forum, infact, never had to ask one question either it was clearly documented or was already "Solved" by someone in the forum...
Thanks to everyone involved in developing this wonderful distro, its been a distro-hopper-stopper for me.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone!

My experience with Linux is very limited, and has mostly been with Debian-based distros as well as some Red Hat tinkering. Despite my lack of experience, I am very fascinated with how an OS works, and I am very anxious to install one that will push me to learn more. ArchLinux seemed ideal, given its support for Bumblebee (I have an Optimus laptop). I am still debating as to whether I want to build Arch from scratch or use ArchBang, but I have plenty of time to decide, as I attempt to virtualize both (see my post for my issues in doing so...). I am excited to interact with this community and learn more!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi, dear Archers.

I was using Ubuntu since the beginning, but the way canoncial went is not mine any more. I don't like Unity and the whole "we make our own thing and don't care for the rest"-stuff. Ubuntu is on a good way to abandon their own philosophy.

So I decided to make a fresh start. I was a bit afraid about arch, but with the WIKI, some Tutorials and the help from the german forums I got everything running and now I'm using Arch for about one month without any other system. It runs perfectly now.

This change was the best decision I could make. Thanks to the great community.

I hope that my not perfect written english isn't disturbing anyone.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello guys! I'm a 21 years old web developer (developing in Symfony2 framework). I used Ubuntu since the Ubuntu Breezy Badger (5.10) was released in 2005, and just switched to Arch this weekend. I think the Ubuntu is a very good distribution for beginners, but after 6 years with Ubuntu I was like 'shit... I need something more', so I compared Arch and Gentoo. The friends told me to use Debian or Slackware or something like that, but I needed more freedom. So I liked this 'Arch way', and wanted to try it, and wanted to learn more about *NIX. Anyway, compiling everything on this Intel Celeron M 530 @ 1.73 would be a huge pain in the ass, so I found out I couldn't use Gentoo, and Arch was more sympathetic too, so it was an easy decision after all.

So, I installed Arch two days ago, installed Xfce too, and I really like it. I like pacman much more than aptitude, seems to be faster. I hope I will reach my goals to master the whole GNU/Linux stuff.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi all!

There you have it, I gave some kind words back to this marvellous project! Have been using linux of the apt-get kind for quite a few years now, having a pleasant stay at the pacman side of things. The wiki has been my go-to online reference for when I was trying to make debian obey my desires. So a big thank you for all this amazing work of packaging and documentation smile

Now I've had my first post here, after being registered for quite a while, I might even join in on a clear-stuff-out mission, on the wiki or over here. See you around smile

Hi all,

Another ubuntu ex-user here. Was getting tired of all the simplifications and not knowing for sure what happened in my computer so i gave Arch a try.

Been using Arch for a month now and i love it. Ever since using slackware more than a decade ago i didn't feel like i owned my computer. See you.

Hey all, and a big thanks to everyone who works hard on making this such a great distribution.  Somehow I expected it to be a lot more difficult to get up and running, but as a friend asked me before I started "Well, do you know how to read?" Heh. Apparently I learned something over the last ten years because it was all pretty straightforward, and I havent had this much fun with my operating system since the first time I installed Slack.  Cheers!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hiya!

I decided to start using Linux after I bought my laptop in October 2010. Been using Linux Mint 9,10 and 11 since then, but after a few months of tinkering with Arch in Virtualbox and getting to know the excellent Wiki, community and Arch-way I decided to give it a try. I was very tired of having to do a fresh install every time a new version came out, just to keep on the (not so) bleeding edge of things...

Installed Arch yesterday and already the forums and Wiki helped me solve a few video driver and other display problems...! Way to go!

Thanks and see you around!
