x86_64 kernel hangs on macboo pro

I have a mac book pro and whenever I try to boot the x86_64 kernel from the install cd it hangs at "Booting the kernel." Has anyone gotten past this point? I understand the install cd is running kernel version 3.0.3
Any tips would be appreciated.

BTW, the i686 kernel boots fine and I'm able to install, but I needed to use a 64 bit kernel.
