Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

I have just updated the germ.winpe.com x86_64 and i686 repos @ 10:26GMT 30th Nov 2011.

Appears to be just an update of the mate text editor.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Hello Perporos,

first and foremost, I am probably behind the curve here;  thank you very much for your work forking Gnome 2. The undertaking you have embarked on is breathtaking.

Are you still working on this project solo, or have other developers stepped up to the plate? Yes or no, I would like to know how I might be of service? I am a system programmer and computer science student. I have not had a lot of experience with GUI shells, yet I learn fast and can usually pick things up on the fly.

I have not had a lot of experience with GUI shells too.
And I still do not understand well the glibs.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

I have both MATE, and Gnome 3 installed.  In MATE, the places menu opens Nautilus 3, but the desktop icons open Caja.
How can I fix it so that both the desktop and the places menu open the file manager (I'd prefer Nautilus 3)?

when I installed mate with gnome 3, I got 2 messages about conflicting files "mate-notify" and another that I can't remember, and I was asked to remove the conflicts.  When I answered Y, the install completed. However, I could no longer switch between mate and gnome 3, I could only log into the system with MATE as my DE.  Not sure how to fix it.

Good to know I am not the only one flying blind. I hear you about 'glibs', or should I say libraries in general; they can be a bit of a kludge. Been working on an Operating System in my spare time. Six years, 40,000 plus lines of code, and a lot of sleepless nights latter and I still can hardly fathm the complexities of the ANSI C library. As an instructer of mine once said "Programming is sort of like hitting your self in the hand with a hammer; because it feels so darn good when you stop".

Thanyou for the link; I will sign up for the list and see what I can do. I can not prommise mericles at this stage; I hope I can at least  help point you in the right direction. Thank you again for your time and effort.

I'm curious about this as well. Not running Gnome 3 but I have Nautilus Elementary installed and it opens when I click anything in the places menu but desktop icons open in Caja.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Open ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list with text editor

search:

[Default Applications]

add the following line:

inode/directory=caja.desktop

note that file .desktop is same as files in /usr/share/applications/*.desktop or ~/.local/share/applications/*.desktop

---
I am coding the gui way.

You can set nautilus elementary to run as the file manager:
With mateconf-editor, navigate /desktop/mate/session/required_components/filemanager
and change the value of filemanager, from caja to nautilus. re-login.

how did you install both mate and gnome 3?  I received a file conflict error, and when I replaced the file my gnome 3 would not load, I could only load mate.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

To fix the Chromium / xdg-open issue:

Open /usr/bin/xdg-open with text editor as root.

goto line 310

search

    if [ x"$KDE_FULL_SESSION" = x"true" ]; then DE=kde;
    elif [ x"$GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID" != x"" ]; then DE=gnome;

replace with

    if [ x"$KDE_FULL_SESSION" = x"true" ]; then DE=kde;
    elif [ x"$GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID" != x"" ]; then DE=gnome;
    elif [ x"$MATE_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID" != x"" ]; then DE=mate;

goto line 383

search

open_gnome()
{

replace with

open_mate()
{
    if gvfs-open --help 2>/dev/null 1>&2; then
        gvfs-open "$1"
    else
        mate-open "$1"
    fi

    if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
        exit_success
    else
        exit_failure_operation_failed
    fi
}

open_gnome()
{

goto line 588

search

    lxde)
    open_lxde "$url"
    ;;

replace with

    lxde)
    open_lxde "$url"
    ;;

    mate*)
    open_mate "$url"
    ;;

done.

Somebody want to contact freedesktop.org to add this? I am so lazy.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Hello there. I fixed the keybinding problem. It was a recently GTK update that broke the key detect code. And now it work fine. The version with the fix is in mate-control-center and mate-settings-daemon on 2011.12.08
I hope make a new update on each package soon.

It's all about the style of the desktop for me. I hate applications and systems that try to know what I want and what I want to do. I hate applications that try to second guess me.
Mate, just like Gnome2 is pretty static, nothing happens unless I make it happen and that is ALL I expect from a desktop.

To be honest I have been looking at Openbox quite a bit and I guess Mate users may well think Openbox is a step backwards from Mate.
I see it more as a step towards greater freedom and more control.

I guess we all look for something quite different in a operating system/desktop environment. I love the simplicity of Arch Linux and I feel the simplicity of Openbox and to some extent Mate as a good compliment to Arch Linux.

To me KDE is like a nightmare, the main menu system is like a bottomless pit of menus, a bit like Windows to me. I always feel out of my depth and out of control in KDE.
Desktops are pushing forward and I just don't want to go with them.

Does any of that make sense to others that are using Mate?

I've installed Mate DE but I don't know how to edit the "Applications" menu.

How to do that ?

Mate came with the menu editor initially but it disappeared awhile ago. I've just been manually editing the entries in /usr/share/applications

Nevermind, I found what was happening. Apparently Firefox and Thunderbird sets it's own icons. I do know GNOME overrides this to make it themeable, and I think other destop envoronments, apps, and panels do this too. Can you program Mate to do this too.

A couple of things:

Chromium can't set itself as the default browser.
mateconf-editor can't change the default compression level for archives.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Good news for mate-system-tools. I managed to google down the PKGBUILD tarball for system-tools-backends and added it to the AUR, I've also updated the PKGBUILD to work with the newer repositories since perlxml is provided by perl-xml-parser and pkgconfig is provided by pkg-config, also the original tarball had the sources inside it rather than downloading it from the url so I fixed that since thats how AUR guidelines say to do. Now someone might want to make a PKGBUILD for mate-system-tools.

If I were notified of this first and also informed when your server is up I could get my mirror updated quicker.
Now I will be just another user trying to update from and overworked slow server.

As it is right now your server is down and I can only keep periodically testing to see when it is up.

This does make the job of maintaining a mirror harder work and rather frustrating.
