Need Help build my ati custom kernel

Hello.

I have been trying to build a custom kernel based on kernel2612-cko2-swsusp2 but modified:

-2.6.10 version for better compatibility with Ati drivers
-without swsusp2
-without cdburning.patch
Here are PKGBUILD:

# Contributor: dibblethewrecker <dibblethewrecker.at.jiwe.org>
pkgname=kernel2610-cko2-ati
pkgver=2.6.10
pkgrel=1
pkgdesc="The Linux Kernel 2.6.10 and modules (IDE support) with -cko2 patchset and ati support"
url="http://www.kernel.org"
backup=('boot/kconfig26')
depends=('module-init-tools')
install=kernel26.install
source=(http://kem.p.lodz.pl/~peter/cko/rel/patch-2.6.10-cko2.bz2 ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v … er.tar.bz2 config)

Re: Need Help build my ati custom kernel

Thank you for your reply.
I just started the compile-makepkg of the kernel again.
I will post the error in about half an hour.

Re: Need Help build my ati custom kernel

it's going to give you a totally screwed up result!  That PKGBUILD is just for that kernel.

I would start over and use the custom kernel PKGBUILD I made - you can find it on the wiki - i'd also read the page about building a custom kernel actually!

Re: Need Help build my ati custom kernel

dibblethewrecker,

I followed your advice.
I used your PKGBUILD from the wiki modified it to add cko2 patchset for kernel 2.6.10, your config from kernel26cko modifying the LOCALVERSION to -ati and adding arch logo support.

I am compiling it now.

I will post later with the results.

Re: Need Help build my ati custom kernel

The makepkg failed again with the same error.
I believe it is because i used 2.6.10 kernel with 2.6.12 config file...

So i extracted the .config from the kernel.2.6.10-3.pkg.tar.gz from the Arch 0.7 cd renamed it to config and modified for ati and changed LOCALVERSION.

Compiling started a few minutes ago.
Lets hope I am lucky now...

Yes, this WILL give you problems compiling.

Re: Need Help build my ati custom kernel

Compile failed and with the kernel 2.6.10-3 config file from the Arch 0.7 cd package.

Is something wrong with my PKGBUILD?
It was created following the WIKI.

Another think I though was extracting the defconfig from kernel-2.6.10.tar.gz the one I have to be downloaded by the site but it will not have the modifications the arch-2.6.10 had.

Any suggestions?

Um, maybe that's not the Arch way, I don't know yet, but why not use an unmodified kernel? wink

If it's because of ATI drivers, I'm running 2.6.12.2 with ati drivers patched and working for 2D and 3D, someone even made a PKGBUILD for the drivers... And everything rock solid and all...

We can't help you - you don't really know what you are doing and we can't do it for you.  There is nothing wrong with the PKGBUILD, those are errors in the code.  There might be problems with your PKGBUILD - you have included the logo but -cko contains fbsplash - I presume you have actually disabled one in the config?

You could try disabling the sound driver that is causing the errors - and you could try -cko3 - i'm not sure why you are using -cko2

flying_icarus - he's not happy with those, hence this whole exercise

Re: Need Help build my ati custom kernel

.config is specific to each kernel rev.  try make oldconfig, maybe that will help.

In this kernel I have made the modifications for ati-drivers in the kernel26 config as shown in the wiki. I used the PKGBUILD from the wiki for custom kernels.
I installed it and now I am posting from it. big_smile

I downloaded the ati-drivers-5 PKGBUILD to build my ati drivers.In the PKGBUILD I used
_kernel=2.6.12-ati
When I makepkg I get:

Error for GCC3 at end of your post.  Did you upgrade GCC to 4? :?:

why have you used an nvidia patch?

Re: Need Help build my ati custom kernel

I use gcc 3.4.3.
I only do pacman -Syu for updates.
I just used the patches of the original arch kernel26.
Nvidia of course not needed...could it be the source of the problem?

Re: Need Help build my ati custom kernel

modprobe fglrx says fglrx not found.

Here's my train of thoughts, maybe someone more knowlegable would object. wink

Maybe we can first find out if the fglrx module compiled to somewhere. If you didn't use "makepkg -c" and look in the directory where you ran makepkg, there should be two subdirectories, "src" and "pkg".

You can try and see if there is a fglrx.ko in src by typing

find . -type f -iname fglrx.ko

with src as working directory. If fglrx.ko compiled you will get a path where it is stored.
Then you can do the same thing, only in pkg directory.

If fglrx.ko is in src but not in pkg, then the PKGBUILD you're using is probbably not doing something correctly. In this case only, you can manually try copying fglrx.ko from src to your kernel modules directory, with something like this

/var/abs/local/fglrx/src/$ mkdir /lib/modules/`uname -r`/video
/var/abs/local/fglrx/src/$ cp `find . -type f -iname fglrx.ko` /lib/modules/`uname -r`/video

That should place the fglrx module where the kernel module loading utilities can find it. After that just try

modprobe fglrx

to see if the module loads.

If it does, then try starting X and tell us if it works. wink Just a note: in my experiments with fglrx kernel module, sometimes it would compile and load, but X would crash or freeze or not get acceleration if fglrx didn't compile correctly (i.e. not all the patches were applied correctly). smile

And, the second case, if there is no fglrx.ko in src directory, then the compile failed (and it shouldn't have). smile

If you haven't rebooted after installing the package you should try running depmod and then try modprobe fglrx.

Re: Need Help build my ati custom kernel

You can't run the Radeon module and the fglrx module at the same time.

Here's what you should do:
· su
· nano -w /etc/rc.conf
· Find the line that says MODULES=(
· Add fglrx to it
· Then reboot
