Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I am a newbie, attempting to install the Catalyst driver on my fully up-to-date Arch system. I am following the instructions on the Arch wiki, but encounter problems at the second step (pacman -Syu):

:: Replace libgl with catalyst/catalyst-utils? [Y/n]
resolving dependencies...
looking for inter-conflicts...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: ati-dri: requires libgl=7.11.2
:: intel-dri: requires libgl=7.11.2
:: mach64-dri: requires libgl=7.11.2
:: mga-dri: requires libgl=7.11.2
:: r128-dri: requires libgl=7.11.2
:: savage-dri: requires libgl=7.11.2
:: sis-dri: requires libgl=7.11.2
:: tdfx-dri: requires libgl=7.11.2

I ran pacman -Qs libgl and it shows that I am currently running libgl 7.11.2-1. What did I miss?

Is there an issue with Suspend to RAM using Catalyst? Ever since I switched STR fails around 1 in 5 times. The switch to Catalyst as I already mentioned coincided with a migration to KDE, but I think Catalyst is the most likely culprit.

I have had a similar problem in the past with catalyst on a sony vaio / HD6470.
For me, using the following script completely fixed the problem:

<code snip>

as stated in the script comments, this was originally a fix for a concurrency bug in the intel xorg module.
The script sets all bar one CPUs offline during suspend, switching them back on 10 seconds after resume.
Before using this script, suspend to ram would randomly fail with no apparent error.. usually around 1 time in 4 or 5.
I will be interested to see if it also fixes your problem. Good luck.

Thanks for the script. Unfortunately, it didn't help. I tried to suspend a few times and it failed every time (to suspend).

In fact, my problem is both with going into and coming out of sleep. Sometimes it fails to sleep (just hangs for minutes with blank screen while fans keep working), other times it fails to resume and other times it just works great.

That's disappointing, can you glean any useful information from /var/log/pm-suspend.log?

Thank you. Then, after Catalyst is installed, will I end up with a newer libgl or something else?

Later: BORKED. Arch boots to a mostly black screen with a few colored bands at the top and a large, blue square mouse pointer. All the commands installing Catalyst were successful. Was I supposed to do something else after "aticonfig --initial"?

I guess I can chroot from a LiveCD, if I know how to fix it.

Still later: Ah, I see much more configuration info way down at the bottom of the wiki page. The instructions said reboot, so I rebooted. Oh, well...

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Ok, I am getting frustrated. I finally got back into Arch by manually editing grub.cfg in my /boot partition (a no-no) and adding nomodeset to the boot command for Arch.

Checking my drivers showed that I was running radeon.

So, I added fglrx to MODULES in rc.conf, blacklisted radeon in modprobe.conf, and rebooted. Now, I think I am in fglrx. I ran amdcccle and it seems to show that I'm running fglrx. When I examine Xorg.log.0, it seems to say I'm running fglrx.

But, if I run "lsmod | grep fglrx", it returns nothing. And if I run "sudo lspci -v", it shows that the kernel module is still radeon. glxinfo does not work, I guess I need to install it.

So, what driver am I running?

Thanks,
Tim

Later - I installed mesa-demos and ran glxinfo. Here is the output:

name of display: :0.0
X Error of failed request:  BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
  Major opcode of failed request:  138 (ATIFGLEXTENSION)
  Minor opcode of failed request:  66 ()

/var/log/Xorg.0.log is full of messages from fglrx, so that must be what the system is using.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@ratchteer
I had a similar issue to you myself when installing today. When I installed catalyst and catalyst-utils I received this error message:

[2011-12-04 10:10] WARNING: Couldn't open directory /lib/modules/3.1.1-1-ARCH: No such file or directory
[2011-12-04 10:10] FATAL: Could not open /lib/modules/3.1.1-1-ARCH/modules.dep.temp for writing: No such file or directory

Now I'm relatively new to Arch but I took this to mean that the prebuilt modules for that package were meant for the 3.1.1 kernel and the latest one in the repository is 3.1.4. So, what worked for me was to remove catalyst and install catalyst-generator and then building and installing the module using catalyst-generator like so:

sudo pacman -Rdd catalyst
sudo pacman -S catalyst-generator linux-headers

then, don't use sudo for this one

catalyst_build_module

After that make sure that you run sudo aticonfig --initial as well as blacklist radeon in you modprobe.conf and put fglrx in the MODULES section of rc.conf

If that worked make sure you read up on the Wiki about catalyst-generator and kernel updates.

@Bhran
I run KDE but AFAIK the ati drivers don't work 100 percent for GNOME Shell yet but if you run the latest like I wrote here I read somewhere that there were minimal issues. If you don't run a laptop or use games though I would highly recommend that you stick with the open source drivers until catalyst 11.12 as GNOME Shell should be fixed by then.

Well, here we are: http://pastebin.com/z06aETc5

That's the entire pm-suspend.log

Some context:
These are the lines where I included your script and it failed to suspend twice

$ grep 00CPU -n /var/log/pm-suspend.log
18232:Running hook /etc/pm/sleep.d/00CPU suspend suspend:
18234:/etc/pm/sleep.d/00CPU suspend suspend: success.
18364:Running hook /etc/pm/sleep.d/00CPU suspend suspend:
18366:/etc/pm/sleep.d/00CPU suspend suspend: success.

This is the start of this morning's FAILED wake attempt (after a successful suspend Saturday night/Sunday morning).

18803:Mon Dec  5 11:56:49 EET 2011: Awake.

Let me know if you have any insight. I can run a bunch of suspend/resume trials on a new log and see what that gives us if you think it would help.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Thanks for your reply, @MartyTM. I am running kernel 3.1.4-1, but the module must have installed, successfully.

The last thing that is bothering me is this message from Xorg.0.log:

(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0@1:0:1) found

The device section is clearly included, and matches the Identifier in the Screen section:

Section "Device"
        Identifier  "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
        Driver      "fglrx"
        BusID       "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0"
        Device     "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
        Monitor    "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
        DefaultDepth     24
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport   0 0
                Depth     24
        EndSubSection
EndSection

This is all from the xorg.conf that was generated by "aticonfig --initial".

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

You're right, it definitely looks like it's running, maybe you should try deleting your xorg.conf and re running aticonfig.
If that doesn't work maybe it's a hardware problem, that's the only thing I could think of. What if you run:

lspci | grep 'VGA'

Maybe the card isn't being seen by the system.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

ATTENTION! ;P
Important update

Due to using deprecated depmod method inside catalyst package it was not working as good as it should (it was not working at all ;P) when kernel was updated, even small kernel update caused it to crash.
New catalyst 11.11-2 should work fine (so now there's no need of recompiling catalyst with every kernel update, just with bigger one [like 3.1==>3.2]).
Same as catalyst-generator 11.11-2.
Sorry for inconvenience :-(

Other things worth to mention about [catalyst] repo:
- i have added opencl-headers-1.1.20110526-1 package, reason is here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1025075
- i removed xorg-server-catalyst-maximize-fix package, i wrote that i want to perform such step some time ago and there was no opposite so... bb xorg-server-catalyst-maximize-fix

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hello everyone!

I'm moving from another topic on this forum because I feel the information I have for my particular GFX card is more appropriate in this topic.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 5007#p2154

Thanks for your reply Handy.

It is most definitely a driver issue. The machine is running a dual boot setup with Windows 7. Under Windows the GPU stays at a consistent 50°C - 55°C. It will ramp up to 70°C under load which triggers the fans to go into 100% rotations. But as soon as the load is taking away the GPU will cool back to 55°C and the fans will spin down.

Under Arch the GPU goes up to 80°C within the first few minutes after a cold boot. Even with no load on the machine and a low clock profile.

edit: My plan right now is to install Ubuntu out of the box. It's my understanding that they provide proprietary drivers as part of their core package. I'll get Ubuntu running and see how the GPU behaves. I'm hoping I can close in on the source of the problem in this way. I'll report back here later with my test results.

edit2: I seem to have found a solution to the HD5470M problem. I'm going to move my post to the larger AMD Bar & Grill topic.

I have a Dell Studio 1558 with an HD5470M.

Running Arch with the xf86-video-ati driver rendered the above results. Completely unacceptable.
Just now I have installed the latest Catalyst drivers from the [catalyst] repository.

While I was working on getting the driver to run properly, my system was still running the xf86-video-ati driver. According to lm_sensors, the radeon PCI adapter was peaking at +105°C. It held there consistently regardless of actual GPU load.

After rebooting and starting xfce4 I ran into a black screen. I forgot to blacklist "radeon" and add "nomodeset" to the kernel line. After doing that and rebooting the first thing I noticed is that during the boot process the resolution of my screens did not change. In fact, my second monitor which is connected to my laptop via HDMI was not even initialized.

After starting xfce4 the second monitor was automatically initialized and my desktop was rendered at 1920x1080. At this point the temperature of the GPU was 90°C and the fans were still spinning at full speed. Furthermore, my desktop was showing several artifacts. But then the temperature started to drop. All the way down to +60°C. After disabling the native laptop screen the temperature dropped to +53°C

The driver seems to have initialized power saving since the GPU clock and Memory clock are now at 150/200 instead of 750/800 MHz. The system is now idling stable at +53°C. No artifacts to be found. 2D rendering seems fluent (and by that I mean dragging windows around the desktop is now smooth as opposed to when I was running previous version of catalyst).

I'm going to do some more testing tonight and I'll report my findings in this thread. I'm hoping this post can serve as a reference to people who have similar issues with their HD5470M.

@20k : there is no wonder in your investigation.

The free driver is still missing a lot of features even though it is working fine in some conditions. One of these features is the cooldown feature. You have no choice but using the ATI blob for now.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hey guys.. Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I noticed an error in the Catalyst wiki. The 11.11 drivers are not working properly with xorg 1.10. instant crash the second i try to play video of any sort through any video player. (othet than flash in the browser.) I downgraded to xorg 1.10 and all is working properly again.
Also I am having an error where I need to enter the following:

DISPLAY=:0.0 xhost +

before i can run fglrxinfo, or something like sudo kate etc.  Is there a way around this? Can I add this to a startup script somewhere?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@crshbndct
This is a known bug with a certain type of video acceleration (I believe it's xv video acceleration). What video players do you use? VLC and Mplayer both have options to disable video acceleration or use a different backend. If you're on KDE and use phonon-VLC though I don't know how to change the acceleration option for that so I had to downgrade as well or else phonon players like Minitube would crash X as you described.

Now my own question:

Speaking of downgrading, is it possible with arch to keep on a certain kernel and Xorg. I have specified the xorg group and linux and linux-headers in the pacman ignorepkg sections as Xorg 1.10, Catalyst 11.11, and linux 3.1.x are so rock-solid stable on my system I don't want to change a thing with them. Is this safe to do? I don't have any extra modules outside of the kernel installed on my system so as long as linux and the headers are back no problems should be caused there right?

Hi I don't know if this is the place to ask this or not, but I have a fresh install of arch in a radeon hd6630m+ intel card powered laptop, and for now I can run with the intel card so far without problems, but if I try to switch to the radeon with the opensource driver my system freezes at the time I restart Xorg, any of you know where I can look for help? Thank you.
