Pacman awfully slow when syncing

I just did a fresh (my second ever arch) install on an Asus laptop and Pacman is taking loads of time just to sync the system - by the looks of it, for each repository it spends about 10 seconds resolving the server, then syncs each one in under a second. A timed sync ended up measuring 37s just for this basic procedure. The server is as close to me as it can get (neighbouring country) and has an average ping of 43. I tried a wireless and a wire connection, but it doesn't seem to matter much. Otherwise, I have a 10mbit fiber connection, so speed should not be a factor here. This is the first time this has happened to me, though I have heard of people having a similiar problem. Does anybody have an idea what is wrong and/or how to fix it? Probably some configuration error...

Re: Pacman awfully slow when syncing

Try different mirrors, you can find the fastest with rankmirrors (in the pacman package).
