HD turning off due to high temperature?

Hi all,

Ive got new HD for my laptop recently, samsung hn-m500mbb spinpoint, and re-installed arch with /home on LUKS. Ever since the re-install after some time of laptop being powered on, sometimes its few Hs sometimes its a day or so, sometimes while i am using the laptop sometimes while its sitting idle, it appears that the HD just shuts down or some other temporary failure happens. If i try to run any commands or try to shutdown i get IO error or segfaults. There is nothing in the logs apart from this:

Is it possible that the HD is suffering temporary failure because of overheating or something? And if yes, any clues why this might be happening?

Re: HD turning off due to high temperature?

this attribute 194 is vendor specific
for exaxmple :

Device: /dev/sda [SAT], SMART Usage Attribute: 194 Temperature_Celsius changed from 200 to 206
hddtemp /dev/sda
/dev/sda: Hitachi HDS721616PLA380: 31°C

Re: HD turning off due to high temperature?

Guess its not that then.

Ive run /sbin/hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda on the drive, reading some related posts this could help.

Re: HD turning off due to high temperature?

My guess is it will not help you
can you see something related to harddrive in "dmesg", also check smartctl -A /dev/sda
