I'm not getting any work done!

As the title says! I'm in need of a new workstation/desktop setup. Now I'm using GNOME, but for some reason I'm not happy with it anymore. I'd like a fast, lightweight if possible environment with decent amounts of eyecandy. I do like how many GNOME apps work well together but I hate the amount of crap I have to install. I've stayed away from E17 for the same reason.

Any suggestions?

Fluxbox.

I use it at work too!  Even though work PC is Fedora... but I don't have a choice there :-)

hmm... fluxbox looks nice. if i could only find some decent styles that worked right.

xfce has been tried and it seems like a nice, but it still tried to be the entire DE.

I've recently switched from KDE to fvwm.  It's lightweight and highly customizable.  You can get themes for it, e.g. fvwm-crystal and fvwm-themes-devel from [community].

Even things like FVWM-crystal take some configuring. FVWM can look really good, though.

For a lightweight WM, I'd go with one of the *boxes. Fluxbox is fast and supports pseudotransparency and genuine transparency and has a ridiculous number of available themes. I prefer Openbox, which dispenses with the taskbar in favor of a window selection menu, but doesn't support transparency.

I agree.  I, for one, don't like the general behaviour/apperence of fvwm-crystal theme.  I am currently using a theme auto-generated by fvwm. I'll probably start with that and configure it with the help of docs and inspiration from the fvwm-theme .

I liked gnome for a short while too, but quickly grew tired of it.  Xfce4 is a nice option but it's considered to be a DE, whereas fluxbox is a WM.  I like them both, but tend to use fluxbox most of the time.

Regarding fluxbox themes, you might have to find the one that best suits your needs, then customize it to get exactly what you want.

Good luck with it...   8)

Thanks guys!

@ozar: Can you edit the menu that pops up when ya middle-click on the background in fluxbox?

Re: I'm not getting any work done!

don't forget icewm!  I currently use xfce, but I
used ice for a long time.  I prefer ice to flux,
myself.  It's probably just as lightweight, and is
easily configurable.  one silly thing I always
liked about it is it's ability to layer apps.  not
just, "on top," but around five levels deep.
silly, but cool.

I love openbox. It perfect for what I need. I use feh for wallpaper, fbpanel for a panel (of course), I also use switch2 to change the gtk theme and for a file manager I use nautilus. Openbox is also very fast.
