Problems starting Looking Glass

I've installed Project Looking Glass from Sun (manually via the isntructions and not through a PKGBUILD) and, whenever I try to run either lg3d-app or lg3d-session I get an error along the following lines (this was the result of lg3d-app, the session error is very similar, although usually with a different number X disply):

./lg3d-session
~/Java/lg3d/bin ~/Java/lg3d/bin
~/Java/lg3d/bin
Composite XOrg support not enabled
Please see https://lg3d-core.dev.java.net/nvidia-d … HCOMPOSITE
ERROR:
There is an X11 Server already running for DISPLAY=:0.
You must first bring down the X11 Server running this script.
Refer to the instructions in the following URL:
https://lg3d-core.dev.java.net/lg3dgettingstarted.html

The help page it refers to mentions Nvidia things - but I have an ATI card so this doesn't help me...

Re: Problems starting Looking Glass

Composite isn't nvidia specific...

edit your xorg.conf as in the first section of here and restart x. See if that works:

Re: Problems starting Looking Glass

Thanks - that looks really helpful; I'll try it out when I get home.  Is it likely that the errors I'm getting relating to X already running (which it should be for app and isn't when I run session) are related to this?

Re: Problems starting Looking Glass

IIRC, lg3d can be run in a window or started from .xinitrc. Seems to me it only worked one way. I'm not sure which, but try running it as a session in full-mode.

Re: Problems starting Looking Glass

I couldn't get composite working at all - it made eveything unusably slow and windows didn't render properly.  I googled and saw something that suggested it wasn't compatible with the currnet ATI drivers

Ah well - guess I'll have to wait before trying out looking glass...

Re: Problems starting Looking Glass

what is it?  I can't find much that makes sense to me on the website!

How does it compare to looking glass?

Re: Problems starting Looking Glass

They don't really compare. They both are 3D interfaces in Java 3D. LookingGlass is a 3D desktop, Ensmer is a 3D environment. LookingGlass is Linux (and apparently nvidia) only, Ensmer is cross platform. LookingGlass is actively developed, Ensmer is the product of one person contributing a lot of time.

Probably the best way to understand Ensmer is the screenshots:
