How to replace GRUB with LILO

How do I install LILO (pacman -R grub should work).  WHen I run lilo -M /dev/sda it renders my system unbootable

Did you edit the /etc/lilo.conf file before you ran "lilo /dev/sda". You need to ensure lilo.conf is set for the right device. See:
