Soundserver (arts) Crashes At Random

Hi All,
I'm kind of stumped by this one, so I hope someone here can toss me a suggestion or two.
Since upgrading arts to the latest 1.4.1-1 version, the KDE soundserver has crashed on me pretty much once a day (sometimes more), and i can't seem to track down what is causing it.
I have tried shutting down all applications i normally have running (amarok, xine, etc) and left the system for a day, but the error will still reappear.
It's not a severe problem, as all i have to do is restart amarok and it will reload the arts server, but it's still a pain to wake up to every morning.
Also, i no longer have the old version of arts (pre-1.4.1-1, i'm not sure what version it was), so i can't revert back to that and test whether it is still having a problem.  As well, i'm not sure whether it's a kdebase update that caused it or the arts update.
The following is a backtrace from the KDE crash handler that I cannot get any useful info out of, so if anyone can take this and give me a hint as to where to start, it would be appreciated:

Beyond this, i have also examined all of my error log files and cannot find a single error related to this crash.  Is there somewhere that KDE keeps it's error logs that's not /var/log?

My soundcard is an intel8x0, if that changes anything... i know there have been problems with this card and some applications in the past, but posts on this forum have said that more recent packages have solved them.
I have all current updates, but am running a custom 2.6.9 kernel.

Any suggestions are welcome, if you need more info just let me know.
Thanks,
-J.

Is anyone else having this problem at least?

(also, ^bump^ in case anyone has new ideas).

Re: Soundserver (arts) Crashes At Random

I have an intel8x0 too w/o problem on a 2.6.12 custom kernel.

The only thing I would suggest is setting the hardware to autodetect in control panel-> Sound & Multimedia->Sound System.  I remember having problems (pre kde 3.4 though) with this set to alsa.  I also do the auto suspend = 1sec thing too, but it does not seem to matter as much since kde 3.4..

Re: Soundserver (arts) Crashes At Random

Thanks for the reply colnago,

My kde settings are currently set to autodetect, and my auto suspend is 1 second, so i doubt either of those is causing the problem.

I have since set my amarok to play through the xine engine, and since that and xine are really the only two media apps i use right now, it seems to have taken care of the problem (kde sound is just disabled completely to stop arts from initializing).
It would be nice to track down what's causing the problem though.

Oh well, i guess we can't win em all.
Thanks for trying though,
-J.

Re: Soundserver (arts) Crashes At Random

Arts is virtually abandoned, and the Amarok part of it (the arts engine) has not been maintained since ages- so it gets more and more broken.

Re: Soundserver (arts) Crashes At Random

the biggest thing i would like to get out of arts is the ability to duplexing through software.  My soundcard lacks this ability, and it seems the alsa drivers don't do it either.  If there is another way to do this I am unaware of, or if there is a better application than arts out there to do the same job, please let me know.

Thanks,
-J.

Re: Soundserver (arts) Crashes At Random

I think the current version of alsa-lib does that.
