Sound issues - works for KDE, bu nothing else (permissions issue?)

I recently installed Arch Linux on a Lenovo T420 laptop. My sound is working, but only for the system.
I have KDE installed and the login sound and other system sounds are played just fine, but nothing I run has sound.

I tried adding my username to the "audio" group, but that didn't help.

Sounds like a pulseaudio or dmix problem.

Thank you for the reply. I've tried looking into this further from the links you sent, but I'm not able to get it working yet. Do you have any ideas of what I could try more specifically?

For starters, are you trying to use Pulseaudio ?

I wan't trying to specifally. Just trying to get sound working. I believe I was originally using ALSA.
