Does anybody really remember number munchers?

First I'm gonna write a 3D number munchers to get the hang of Soya3D.

But I can't remember enough about number munchers. Somebody remind me about it...

number munchers? You mean methods that just perform linear transforms based on an input vector?

Dammit. I always thought this was like a staple game for the Apple IIe. Now I find I'm pretty much the only person that ever played it.

I guess everybody else is too old or too young to have played educational games on the apple.

I was pretty good at it, mind.

Re: Does anybody really remember number munchers?

dusty, I was just seeing if that was what you were indeed talking about. I dont think I have every played that game, let alone heard of it before. Then again, I was never around apples much back in the day.

I dont think my gradeschool had a computer, and my middle school had very few, if any..

I dont think I was really using a computer until high school (circa 1991/92 I think). And there it was some proprietary system (corvus) and then later mostly dos/winderz.

you're so old, cactus.

That is indeed the game. I see there's a binary for the one, emulated for dos. Wonder if it'll run in wine.

Re: Does anybody really remember number munchers?

If it's a dos game, you can try dosbox. It's a DOS emulator.

When I was in primary school, there was some computers.  They had a trackball incorporated in the keyboard.  They might have been a one-piece computer. I did some logo, there was also a game about Christopher Columbus (I don't remember much about it, though.) My favorite game was a fishing game.  Unfortunately, I don't remember what it was called sad

Re: Does anybody really remember number munchers?

I played carmen sandiego during high school. I was in early 90's. The complete name is:  Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? I liked that game!!!  There is also Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? But it isn't as fun as Where In The World...

Re: Does anybody really remember number munchers?

yeah. either 3.1, or a full dos game. I am thinking it might have been a full dos game...the kind that used to actually take over memory management and things like that.
heh..you almost had to write an OS to write a game back then. wink

Re: Does anybody really remember number munchers?

nah. My first game was caled 'bomb.bas' and I didn't need to know any OS type stuff.

my first game wrote:

You see a bomb with six wires. You need to diffuse it. Which wire do you cut (1-6)? 6

hehehehe.

As Linus said, I don't have anything against games. They're fun to write.

Re: Does anybody really remember number munchers?

always be the banker in oregon trail because you'll start with the most money.
EDIT: Yeah I played number munchers!  I just had to look at the screenshots.  I played number munchers, and now I'm a mathematician.  If my school only had another muncher game, I'd be in the porno industry.

Sweet, now I can play with myself.

Re: Does anybody really remember number munchers?

awesome link phrakture. I'll try that sometime.

BTW, I've got a start on my 3D version. I got a little green dude walking around a board. No numbers. And he walks of the edge sometimes.

The hard part was building a little green dude in blender.

Re: Does anybody really remember number munchers?

I remember number munchers, it was sort of a race against the clock to eat all of the numbers that fit the current category, things like 'multiples of 7' 'primes' and stuff like that. It was strangely addictive I think, there needs to be a competetive multi player version, something like if one person eats such and such numbers fast enough a bunch of extra numbers show up on the opponents screen to make his munching harder. Or maybe even let the opposing player be one of those enemy munchers on the map, sort of like pac man vs on the gamecube where your 3 friends play the ghosts, good times.

3d would be a hard one because the player might forget what numbers are where and would have to recall the locations of numbers fast in addiction to being able to multiply and stuff. One would have to be careful to keep the game focused on the maths when attempting 3d.

I played all sorts of those educational apple II games, other ones I likes were 'quotient quest' 'silly toy' (pretty much a series of questions that drew a funny picture for you) and there was another one I cant remember the title of but it was sort of miner's themed, you had a load of diamonds or gold or something and you had to come up with ramps and pulleys and levers and stuff to get the load to the destination, that was good times.

Dusty How old r u?
I play number munchers and oregon trail. I played those when I was like in kindergraden and like 1st grade. Then I think the learning company had Word Munchers or something like that. I loved that game when I was young smile

Wow, I likely wouldn't have remembered Oregon Trail till you mentioned it.  I think I played Number Munchers too.  I don't think we had much time on those computers in public school.

What I remember using more were these computers with a built in trackball.  The names on the tip of my tongue but I can't think of it.  Had a paint program on it.  And what I played a lot, a game where you had a farm and had to plant your crops and make decisions like whether to pull a stump out, burn it, or plant around it  wink
