X freezing randomly with gnome shell

Hi,

I did a quick search for such sproblems and I did not find any similar issues, that is why i am posting here.

So I have a clean install of Arch on my laptop, with gnome shell and a few other normal things that every users needs.
My problem is that the graphic interface freezes randomly. I can still move the mouse, but I cant click on anything, or do anything useful. I can go to tty1 with ctrl+alt+f1 and the console works fine.

I don't know what logs i should attack so if anyone can give me some pointers to what I should include here(and where I can get that info), I would be happy to do so.

Thank you all for your help.

PS: sorry for my bad english, I have yet to install the spellchecker.

Re: X freezing randomly with gnome shell

You should look at the .xsession log in you home directory.

You could also look at the Xorg logs in /var/logs/Xorg* and the gdm logs in /var/logs/gdm/

See if anything in those looks abnormal.

EDIT: It would also be useful to know what your graphics card is and which drivers you are using for it.

Re: X freezing randomly with gnome shell

well in the .xsessions i don't think there if anything too critical, but if you could take a look maybe you'll see more http://pastebin.com/n1hKdYnw

grep EE Xorg.0.log.old
[ 12.005] Current Operating System: Linux myhost 3.1.5-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Dec 10 14:43:09 CET 2011 x86_64
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
[ 12.153] (II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
[ 12.219] (EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 12.219] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)

and lots of this

[ 653.013] (II) RADEON(0): radeon_dri2_schedule_flip:670 fevent[0x2043080]
[ 653.045] (II) RADEON(0): radeon_dri2_flip_event_handler:1067 fevent[0x2043080] width 1440 pitch 5888 (/4 1472)
[ 653.046] (II) RADEON(0): radeon_dri2_schedule_flip:670 fevent[0x20665f0]
[ 653.079] (II) RADEON(0): radeon_dri2_flip_event_handler:1067 fevent[0x20665f0] width 1440 pitch 5888 (/4 1472)

and for gdm, again i don't see anything that would explain the freezing, so i am attaching the whole log http://pastebin.com/ZARGzjKm .... Sorry if this is giving you too much work.

and this is my graphic card:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV516 [Mobility Radeon X1350]

//just info:
also I should mention i have a little hack, that stops kernel freezing for a few seconds every 5 seconds, cause of the graphics
cat /etc/modprobe.d/options.config
options i2c-algo-bit bit_test=1
but this is just to stop kernel from floding my log files with invalid edid entries. I have to have this since 2.6.35 kernel otherwise my PC is useless

Thank you for any usefull information about this problem smile

Re: X freezing randomly with gnome shell

Did you find an answer? My PC has started doing the same thing. I've got the same graphics card (radeon driver) and I too cannot find any obvious cause.

Re: X freezing randomly with gnome shell

Sadly I have not. Now I am on LXDE which runs without any problems.

I was hoping someone would give me a hint on what to look for in this thread, but since that hasn't happend I had to "move on", because it was just too much of a distraction.

I hope someone helps us find a solution for this, cause gnome-shell really looks nice. It's a shame it's so buggy.

I have no idea if this is the same thing but it's worth looking into: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=129481
