annoying freezes using gnome shell

Gnome 3 seems pretty stable. However, when viewing high resolution pictures, especially many of them in a browser, gnome shell tends to lock up. The screen becomes unresponsive but the mouse cursor can still be moved and it responds to elements on the screen (e.g. window borders). Also sound playback continues. Same happens if I scroll pdf pages fast and continuous using evince or some other pdf viewer.

I can reach the virtual console using CTRL+ALT+F1 but restarting gnome results in a new freeze at the gdm login screen or, if no login manager is used, when loading the desktop.

I have this problem for quite a while now. It pretty much exists since the first release. I seem to be not the only person with this problem [1]. I can't find anything regarding this issue in log files sad

Hardware:
IBM T60
ATI X1400 using the radeon open source drivers

Any suggestions? This is really annoying...

Re: annoying freezes using gnome shell

I have the same problem (and same computer), except in XFCE with Compiz enabled...

I haven't found a solution yet, have you?

Re: annoying freezes using gnome shell

hi! it's great to hear from another person with the same problem. I haven't found a solution yet, but I was investigated.

The guy on askubuntu.com has a Toshiba laptop with a different hardware configuration but also a X1400 graphics card. Most likely it's a problem of the graphics card driver. Objections welcome!

Maybe you and me can track down this problem together smile I haven't debugged graphics driver but it's be about time to do it for the first time!

So how do we get started? Any suggestions from you experienced hackers?

Re: annoying freezes using gnome shell

I'm convinced it's a problem with the video driver, too.  I upgraded to the latest version last night and (knock on wood) haven't had any problems so far...

Re: annoying freezes using gnome shell

I don't think upgrading to the latest version will help us. The version in arch is an almost up to date version. If I look at the commits at http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver … o-ati/log/ I don't think they changed anything concerning this bug. We have to let them know.

Ufff... I'm suffering the same with ATI Mobility Radeon X1400... It's killing me, I can't work.

Did anybody warn upstream?

I was going to do that but I didn't have time to file an adequate bug report...

I wouldn't second that. Before I started using gnome 3 I hardly ever experienced any graphics card related problems. It seems like compiz didn't make use of the graphic card as heavily as gnome 3. So some bugs are just getting known because of the usage of gnome 3.

I would be surprised if the card made problems under windows. We all know why that is. Again, we need to let the developers know such that they can fix the bug.

Re: annoying freezes using gnome shell

when i was using fedora, ubuntu last year with gnome 2.32 the  Xorg always used to stutter when playing HD videos  for around 20 -25 mins continuosly.
i would be forced to get back to windows to finish the videos.coz it would make the whole system slow.

Re: annoying freezes using gnome shell

Ok, so it's a Gnome bug for sure? Not an ATI thing? Which info/logs would be helpful? I coulnd't find anything that looked useful under /var/log and I don't want to file a bug report at the wrong place with no information. We could use this thread to gather all needed info and then I'll report it upstream.

[EDITED]

Alright, with this search https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cg … ome+freeze I could find some possibly related bug reports, such as:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41668
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=40564
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42678

The first one looks pretty much the same, what do you think, guys?

YES, that's the one: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41668

It appears to be a linux kernel problem. Can someone confirm adding "pci=nomsi" or "noapic" to the kernel boot options fixes the problem? I will test it as well.

"noapic" didn't work out for me, i will try "pci=nomsi" as well. i'm not sure whether this is an ati or kernel related bug. i'm pretty sure it's not a gnome bug though.

Re: annoying freezes using gnome shell

none of the workarounds mentioned above did work for me.I have to kill X at least 2 times in an hour at random intervels. No errors in xorg. Its annoying to the extreme that i am typing from fedora !
Fedora doesnt have these issues with almost same Xorg drivers and kernel.

I dont kow where else to look for(logs)?

Re: annoying freezes using gnome shell

Neither they worked for me. I have discovered that $ killall -r gnome gdm sometimes gives me a responsive GDM login screen, but most of the times it just freezes in GDM and I have to reboot. Does it mean anything to you?

 pci=nomsi noapic irqpoll

in kernel command line.so far no freezes.

edit:

I found this in my /var/log/messages.log at the time while i was having freezes.

gnome-session[820]: Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0

Does anyone has this error?

Same problem, ATI X1400,  "irqpoll" didn't work for me.
I'll try "pci=nomsi noapic irqpoll".

Re: annoying freezes using gnome shell

hadrons123 wrote:

I 'm trying this

 pci=nomsi noapic irqpoll

in kernel command line.so far no freezes.

edit:

I found this in my /var/log/messages.log at the time while i was having freezes.

gnome-session[820]: Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0

Does anyone has this error?

Not me... Next time it freezes I'll check it again and dmesg output. Thanks!

Stop the world, I get off...
