(SOLVED) CPU running hot shuts down

Dear Archers
After some recent kernel upgrades, I feel subject problem has started. Has any body faced such similar issues?
Any solution?

Motherboard trouble. One who repaired was not ready to divulge what the problem was. Thanks to all

Re: (SOLVED) CPU running hot shuts down

Did you try using "top" to see if maybe some program or background service is consuming cpu cycles. I have had this issue with Skype a couple of times where it stops responding but starts using 100% cpu. I would also check the fan on the heatsink to make sure that is functioning.

Re: (SOLVED) CPU running hot shuts down

I checked by running 'top'. no indication of any overload on the two cores of CPU. Hardly 0.5/% CPU used
But for using fire fox for email, and browsing, I do not use any CPU-intensive applications. No gaming.

Re: (SOLVED) CPU running hot shuts down

How hot ?
CPU case temperature may approach 100C
Is there a heatsink?
Heat sink temperatures may exceed 80C
Is there I fan? Is it running?
Laptop? Desktop?
How long can you hold your hand on the heat sink?
If you wet your finger, does it sizzle when you touch the CPU?
Some cooling systems have airflow sensors that initiate shutdown in the event it seems "open loop", even though the processor may not really be over heated.

Suggestions to solve this problem are appreciated

A much better statement of the problem will help.

Re: (SOLVED) CPU running hot shuts down

1. Desk top. Pentium D. Cover opened and checked
2. Not measured with thermo-meter, but a touch-feel
3. Both fans, cabinet as well as heat sink, running
4. Actually, it is the heat sink which is hot
5. I do not know where to look for actual values of temperature. Guidance appreciated
6. I fell shut down is because of temperature, because the SMPS is new and green LED on cabinet glows when shut down

Re: (SOLVED) CPU running hot shuts down

Pentium D's run hot. Fact.

Doesn't your CPU have a temperature diode? You can always check temperatures in the BIOS. It's normal that the heatsink is hot... That means it works. Your case and heatsink are dust-free?
