Video on demand and DRM on Arch

Hi all,

Anyone got experience of this type of stuff?

I've been trying to work out how to use a particular (British) video on demand type service, bought a download. The service uses Adobe Air, and you need to install their video player on which you can download the purchase (or view a rental). I managed to install Adobe Air and the player, can log in just fine and download the purchase but when I try to play, it says "checking DRM license" and then "you are not authorised to view the download". The service's FAQ says that as long as you have Adobe Air and the player installed, you can log in on any computer and view your purchases. So it doesn't look like there is an IP address limit. Same thing on both laptop and netbook, both with Arch, 64 bit and 32 bit respectively. However, it works on Windows XP on Virtualbox (it's choppy because there's not enough processor power and RAM but that's another story).

Any guesses, is the DRM the guilty party because obviously Linux and DRM do not mix? Or could it be that it's an old version of Adobe Air, because Adobe stopped supporting Linux (Linux version is 2.6, Windows and Mac versions 3.x)? Have to confess I haven't contacted the service yet because it doesn't look like Linux is very well supported there.

Re: Video on demand and DRM on Arch

I did, but while I can install Adobe Air itself on Wine, the player is one of the air applications that don't work under Wine.

I get a DRM error in command line when trying to play the download. From what I could find out, Adobe at least claimed support for Flash Access in Flash Player 10 for Linux. Also, apparently this thing worked in Ubuntu up to 11.04 if you had HAL and flashplugin installed, but with 11.1 and flash player 11.1 it's not working. I tried with HAL and the oldest 10.x version of Flash Player I could find but no dice. Oh well...
