Computer freezes intermittently

I am a bit rusty with Arch, and I am experiencing an extremely frustrating problem. My display freezes at irregular intervals, and keyboard/mouse input becomes apparently useless. I have looked through the log files in /var/log to try and find something relevant, but I cannot for the life of me. I suppose I might have a bad driver installed? I'm not sure how to diagnose my problem.

Re: Computer freezes intermittently

Run a memtest - maybe bad ram modules

Re: Computer freezes intermittently

My first thought would be memory usage. Check if your system is swapping too much.

*ahem* A little more info would be nice. What happens after freezing; how long; etc.? See if there's anything amiss in dmesg...

Re: Computer freezes intermittently

I have new memory in here, so perhaps it is bad. How long does memtest take to run?

I would like to give you more info, but I'm not sure what else I can provide. Here is a copy of /var/log/dmesg.log:

Re: Computer freezes intermittently

I recently had the same problem, it was related to my ATI graphics card. Upgrading catalyst fixed it (even though it was not recommended, and people were complaining about it). Could you tell us more about your system. Maybe a "lsusb" or "lspci".

Re: Computer freezes intermittently

I have to restart now to try to paste the results of lsusb and lspci. Just crashed again! Possibly related: I am having issues with my wifi connection going out intermittently. This time my wifi went out and then the computer froze while trying to reconnect. Perhaps they're related, or maybe that's just a coincidence.

Re: Computer freezes intermittently

htop shows apparently no swap file usage. Memory holds steady at ~ 300MB (of 4 GB). CPU is less than 1% except occasional 8% hits of wicd. I stopped using wicd, but I suppose I didn't remove it from my rc.conf. I killed it and removed it from rc.conf for now. Hopefully that was the perpetrator.

Re: Computer freezes intermittently

Nope. Must not have been wicd: just crashed again. I'm going to install catalyst in case it's my graphics driver.

Re: Computer freezes intermittently

Sounds very similar to my issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=131925 , and the AMD+ATI box makes me wonder.

Right after i bricked my machine with a hung BIOS flash I realized I hadn't run memtest or tried to swap out RAM.

If you grep through dmesg do you get anything suspect?

Do you have the Alt + SysReq keys enabled, and do they work during a hang? Is there a Caps Lock LED on the machine, and does the key toggle it during a hang?

Re: Computer freezes intermittently

SP5100 TCO timer: mmio address 0xfec000f0 already in use

Turns out I had this (same error that Nathan reports in his link) error message in dmesg. I suppose it's invisible during boot time, because I have some modules running in the background. Some threads on this error recommend blacklisting the sp5100_tco module. So, I tried that by adding modprobe.blacklist=sp5100_tco to my Grub menu.

It seemed for 20-30 minutes that I might have solved my problem, but I just experienced a freeze during the "Activating Swap" part of the boot (stuck on "BUSY"). (I enabled SysRq, but I think it's useless in this case. If I get another freeze after boot, I'll check to see if they work. I do not, however, have any LED indicators on any of my keyboards.)

A subsequent boot succeeded, and I don't think there is any incriminating evidence in dmesg from the previous freeze, or at least I couldn't find anything.

*UPDATE* -- Just experienced another freeze, so blacklisting sp5100_tco was no help for me. I attempted to go through the SysRq routine and none of the commands took any effect (although I was able to verify that at least the kill process commands were working before).

*UPDATE* -- After 2 1/2 passes of Memtest86+, no memory errors were reported.

Re: Computer freezes intermittently

The last freeze occurred during one of the swap processes of the boot sequence. I am beginning to suspect that I might have an issue with my SSD drive (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004XV … hs_product), as I didn't take any SSD-specific measures during my Arch installation.

Partitions and filesystems need some SSD-specific tuning. Page size and erase page size are not autodetected.

This bit from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SSD is particularly insightful. I'll see what that page says I might have to do.

Re: Computer freezes intermittently

So, I found the following recommendations (from http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=890) for file system tuning on an SSD, although they seem to be motivated by performance implications (instead of stability ones), so I have doubt that ignoring these is the cause of my problem:

1. Never choose to use a journaling file system on the SSD partitions
2. Never use a swap partition on the SSD
3. Always edit your new installation fstab to mount the SSD  partitions  "noatime"
4. Never log messages or error log to the SSD

Unless there are other reasons why I should worry about SSD, I suppose I can continue investigating my graphics driver. I hadn't been able to install catalyst-firepro, as there reportedly are versioning conflicts with xorg-server (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29111). I wanted to avoid downgrading xorg-server (and all of its dependencies), but I'm not sure what else to try right now. I can say that I was experiencing these crashes before I installed X, if that matters.

Re: Computer freezes intermittently

I tried to add "pci=nomsi" (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI) to my grub menu item for Arch. This didn't help. I had to hard-reboot again and the subsequent boot hangs at "Triggering uevents..." after "Running Hook [udev]". The cursor in "Triggering uevents..._" (written as an underscore) is actually blinking, but nothing else seems to be happening.

*Update* -- After suspecting rogue BIOS settings, I restored my BIOS to the default settings. 5 minutes into the next boot, I am staring at another frozen screen.

*Update* -- After adding "radeon.modeset=0" to my kernel line in GRUB (as suggested for troubleshooting KMS in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI) and rebooting, I'm now hanging at "Starting D-BUS system messagebus" reporting as "[DONE]". The cursor on the next line is static (not blinking) this time.

There really seems to be no rhyme or reason for this hanging, and I'm not sure what to try next. Perhaps my motherboard has gone bad?

There really seems to be no rhyme or reason for this hanging, and I'm not sure what to try next. Perhaps my motherboard has gone bad?

Ever since my machine hung in the middle of a BIOS update under FreeDOS (Asus netbook board, AMD + ATI chips) I started wondering if there was a low-level issue that was exacerbating otherwise non-fatal kernel-level issues, because a hang in a totally different OS strongly suggests that neither kernel is not the sole perpetrator, or that what appears to be one issue is in fact several. But it does sound like we had the same issue, which means it is replicable.

That is why I asked about the LEDs--I was sometimes getting it flashing during a hang, which means kernel panic. But other times it would straight-up just freeze. Alt+SysRq never worked. Also was experience lock-ups with increasing frequency too, even on package downgrades.

That's just an untested theory though, my machine is vacationing at the OEM repair center now.

EDIT: To follow-up, i got "my" box back from Asus a few days ago. Same case, screen, touchpad, but def. a new mobo and it looks like a new HDD. While i still get the SP5100 warning in dmesg and got the address space collision message in the 3.0 and 3.1 kernels, i had no freezes/kernel panics. With the 3.2 kernel (vanilla and CK-BFS) i only get the SP5100 message. Still a mystery.
