Overheating K8N-DRE

Been using this box for a couple of years. I don't regularly do anything taxing on it, but the other day I wanted to backup a couple of DVDs and got tired of waiting for my old Core Duo laptop to do the job so I popped them into my beefy server (not really beefy.. but beefier..) and vobcopy -m then did HandBrakeCLI  over ssh. Soon thereafter I lost my ssh connection.

So I scratched my head and walked out into the garage (where its like 5 deg C these days) to find the server 'activating logical volumes'. damn I thought, that is weird. I tried a few more times before realizing it wasn't a handbrake bug, but my box was overheating.

Any ideas? I will try and replace the fans and re-apply some fresh arctic silver, but outside of hardware failure, are there things I'm missing here - OS wise - that could contribute to the overheating? They are amd procs so I have the powernow (sp?) module loaded and use the ondemand governor.

Are those RPMs real?  Is it possible your CPU fan has gone "Tango Uniform" ?

Not all the fans are connected. But all positions are reported by the chip.

There are four fans in the box (five if you count the PSU's but I don't think that is reported)

1 per CPU, these are 1U size, though I have room for more.
1 HD fan 80mm (?)
1 case fan 120mm (?)

but yeah I don't think the speeds are necessarily reported accurately.
