this message appeared just after i altered the original panel a bit...
2. when shutting down the console says something like "var/run/gdm.pid doesn't exist perhaps GDM isn't running [FAIL]"

Re: 2 questions about gnome

1. If you search the forum you'll discover that at least 3 posts already exist about the panel problem.

2. How are you starting GDM? How are you shutting down your system?

Re: 2 questions about gnome

Did you try to start it via /etc/inittab and not daemonize it?

Re: 2 questions about gnome

There's no particuraly good reason having gdm running all the time and eating resources.
Edit /etc/inittab, two lines need altering.
id:5:initdefault: (for going directly to runlevel 5)
x:5:respawn:/opt/gnome/bin/gdm -nodaemon (for starting gdm and not daemonizing it).
No troubles here when I checked it (although normally I use kdm).

Re: 2 questions about gnome

Scarecrow is right (I use GNOME and gdm and that's exactly what I did), and if you need more info check out the wiki.  There's a section in the how to's under Desktop & WM called GNOME that has information about setting up GNOME and gdm.

Re: 2 questions about gnome

the reason it's failing is that when you shut down through gnome, it closes gdm. rc.conf thinks gdm should be running, but it's not, so it fails to close it. harmless. you don't have to change the way gdm is running, although freeing up some resources is a good suggestion smile
